Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 10: To mark the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Tsunami and its profound impact on the Nicobars district, the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, released two documentaries, titled ‘20 Years Later’ and ‘Surviving the Tsunami’, in the presence of Ms. Jyoti Kumari, Deputy Commissioner, Nicobars district today.
In his address, the Chief Secretary stated the importance of documenting and recording the authentic oral histories of the day of 26.12.2004, from the survivors, the community leaders and Government official involved in the rescue and relief operations. He also highlighted the importance of continued awareness and sensitization about Tsunami to the inhabitants of the Islands and the younger generation so that community is empowered to respond timely and effectively in the event of a disaster.
‘20 Years Later’ provides a comprehensive look at the long-term effects of the tsunami on the Tamaloo village in Car Nicobar Island of Nicobars District. By showcasing the remains of the old Tamlaoo village and its contrast to the new settlement, the documentary explores the significant changes in the life of the community over two decades. It highlights the efforts made in rebuilding infrastructure, restoring the local economy, and implementing disaster preparedness measures to better protect the community in the future.
On the other hand, ‘Surviving the Tsunami’ offers a more personal and intimate perspective, featuring the experience of the Headman of Tamaloo Village, Shri Paul Benjamin, who lived through the calamity. Their stories reflect the unimaginable challenges they faced, the emotional toll of survival, and the strength they found in the aftermath. This film aims to honor the lives of those lost and highlight the resilience of the survivors.
