Port Blair, Feb 11: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen A. K. Singh (Retd) has conveyed his felicitations to the sportspersons from Andaman & Nicobar Islands, who have won medals in their respective events in the 35^th National Games in Kerala. In a message, the Lt. Governor has commended the performance of the players of Andaman & Nicobar Contingent who have won medals in Rowing, Canoeing and Kayaking and Cycling events.

“My felicitations and admiration for our sportspersons for this excellent performance. Proud of you,” said Lt. Governor in a message sent to Andaman Sheekha.

The players from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have won 04 Gold Medals, 02 Silver Medals and 01 Bronze Medal as on 11.02.2015.

Ms. Reena Kumari opened the account of the National Games on 05.02.2015 with a Silver medal in the 500 Mtr Single Scull Rowing events. Ms. Deborah struck gold in the 500 mtrs elite women time trial cycling competition with a National Games record of 37.68 seconds. Ms. Regina Kiro won a Gold medal in the 500 Mtr K1 and also a Silver medal in 1000 Mtr K1 in the individual events. Alongwith Ms. Sandhya Kispota, she won 02 Gold medals in 1000 Mtr K2, 500 Mtr K2 team events. Ms. Sandhya Kispota separately won a Bronze medal in 1000 Mtr K4 team event with Ms. Mamta Tirkey, Ms. Neelam Minj and Ms. Bishakhi Sarkar.

Such performances and the medals tally speak volumes of the talent and efforts put in by the sportspersons of our Islands. Considering all the difficulties and challenges as well as the remote location of the Islands, they stand out when compared with some of the bigger States.

Port Blair, Feb 10: The Mathura Village often faces water scarcity leaving public totally harassed and helpless. The Jinga Nallah Dam is the main source of water for entire region of Mathura, under Ferrargunj Tehsil. Thus residents of the area are dependent on the said dam for their water needs.

But it has been reported by the residents of the area that due to no desilting work in the Dam since last several years the entire area of the Dam is accumulated with silts thus day-by-day reducing its water storage capacity.

General public and several organizations in past have approached the RCD, Wimberlygunj for carrying out desilting work in the Dam but till now no one paid any heed.

“We have urged the Administration to take concrete or firm measures to dredge out the accumulated silts from the Jinga Nallah Dam in order to increase the water storing capacity of the Dam, so as to feasibly meet the drinking water demands of Mathura Village but for reasons unknown it is not done yet,” said Ajish Prasad, a Member of All India Crime Reforms Organisation.

When Andaman Sheekha team visited the Jinga Nallah dam it was found that the Dam is full of silt, which has certainly reduced the capacity of the dam.

Now the villagers of the area urge the Lt. Governor to intervene into this matter and initiate action in the legitimate interest of the residents of Mathura Village so that before summer the desilting work is completed.

Diglipur, Feb 06: Seven passengers inside a private jeep today narrowly escaped death when a Mahindra jeep, they were travelling in, skided off the Andaman Trunk Road and entered inside road side jungle.

According to reports the accident took place at Mohanpur area, under Kalipur Range, when the driver of the jeep lost control over the speeding jeep.

All seven people inside the jeep (bearing registration no. AN-01, J-8618), including the driver sustained minor injuries, who were later rushed to nearby hospital, from where they were discharged after first aid. The PS Kalighat Police is investigating the matter further.

Port Blair, Jan 30: Basically when a person gets heart attack due to blockage of a blood vessel  supplying  heart, it needs to be cleared  within six hours or else the heart muscle undergoes irreversible damage. Any treatment done afterwards cannot bring those damaged muscle back to its function. So this first six hours of chest pain signifying underlying heart attack is called golden period as any intervention done during this period has tremendous benefits to the patient.

So when a diabetic elderly female patient was brought to CMHS with chest pain of two hour duration and ECG showing heart attackthe CMHS staffs immediately shifted patient to CMHS’s heart care centre at second floor.  An emergency angiography was done by  cardiologist Dr Uttam Kr Saha, which showed complete blockage of a major blood vessel of heart. Immediate aspiration of blocking debris comprising blot clot, cholesterol and calcium was done by a very fine catheter. Subsequently balloon dilatation and placement of stent was done. Post stenting complete recanalisation was seen as evident in the underlying photographs. The patient was shifted to ICU where she was kept under ventilator support for one day. She recovered by fifth post procedural day and was discharged hale and hearty.

Port Blair, Jan 28: A defence vehicle was seen today entering the one way road of Aberdeen Bazaar. This is not the first such case, earlier also Andaman Sheekha had published photographs of ANC vehicles violating Traffic Rules and entering the same one way road from, causing traffic Jam. General public questions whether traffic rules are only for  Civilians.

However, the Traffic Police Jawans were seen making way for the Army Vehicle while when General public jumps the one way, the same Traffic Jawans slap challan of Rs. 500, saying rule is rule for everybody. (Pic: Gurumander Singh)

Port Blair, Jan 12: The Lt Governor, Lt General A K Singh (Retd) led the islanders in paying rich tributes to Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary today which is also observed as National Youth Day. At a function held at the JNRM premises this morning, the Lt Governor offered floral tributes at the statue of Swami Vivekananda, followed by the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Adhyaksha Zila Parishad, South Andaman, Ms VK Mariyam Bibi and senior officers of the Administration.

Later, addressing a gathering at JNRM auditorium, the Lt Governor, Lt General A K Singh (Retd) called upon the youth of the Islands to draw inspiration from the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda.

The Lt Governor said Swami Vivekananda lived a short life but achieved so much in that little time. “We have to learn lessons from his life and teachings”, he said, adding that student life is the best phase of life and called upon the students to make best use of this precious time. The Lt Governor further stated, Swami Vivekananda had a special affinity to children and his slogan for student and youth was “contribute to your own self empowerment, society, area and the nation as a whole”. Character development was the main mission of Swami Vivekananda who focused on developing character of the youth throughout his life.

The Lt Governor reminded that Swamiji believed in character building for making a great nation. “If money and health is lost, one can regain it but once the character is lost that blot remains throughout your life”, the Lt Governor added.

Swami Vivekananda realized that three things are important for person to become successful. First, conviction of the power of goodness, second, absence of jealousy & suspicion and control of the ego and, third, help those who are trying and are doing good, the Lt Governor told the students.
Turning to the youth of the Islands, he said our youth should have a clear goal and an action plan to achieve them. The Islands will progress only when there is creativity among our children and ability to translate their creativity into reality, the Lt Governor said and exhorted the students to dream big and keep their goals high. He mentioned that the younger generation today works with hope of success: their mantra being –“I can, I shall and I will”.

The function was also graced by the BJP President, A & N Islands, Shri Vishal Jolly, Secretary, RK Mission, Swami Amartyananda. The programme was organized by the Department of Sports and Youth affairs, in association with Department of Education, JNRM, TGCE, BRAIT, NYK, SAI and Ram Krishna Mission.

Earlier, the Secretary Education, Shri Devinder Singh welcomed the chief guest and others present on the occasion. The function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the Director Sports, Shri Dharmendra Kumar.
