Port Blair, Feb 24: Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) arrived at Air Force Station Carnic on a five day visit on 23 Feb 12. He was commissioned in the then Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) at the young age of 20 years in December 1939. He was awarded DFC in 1944 for leading the No 1 squadron in various campaigns and had the unique honour of leading the fly past of more than 100 Indian Air Force aircraft (IAF) over Red Fort, Delhi on 15 Aug 1947. He exhibited his mantle as Chief of Air Staff during the decisive victory over Pakistan in 1965 war and became the First Air Chief Marshal of IAF. In recognition of his services, the rank of ‘Marshal of the IAF’ was conferred on him on 26 January 2002 making him the first and only ‘Five Star’ rank officer with the Indian Air Force.
On his arrival at Air Force Station Car Nicobar he was received by Rear Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of Staff, Andaman and Nicobar Command.
The Marshal unveiled the Indian Air Force Crest at Car Nicobar. During wreath laying ceremony at Air Force Tsunami Memorial, he paid homage to the personnel and families who lost their lives during the tsunami of 2004. Later in the evening, The Marshal addressed all personnel of Air Force Station Car Nicobar.
The Marshal would also visit Naval Air Station Campbell Bay and Indira Point, the Southernmost point of India. At Campbell Bay he would interact with Army, Navy, GREF and Coast Guard Personnel as well as the officials of District Administration and members of the Tribal Council.
