Port Blair, Dec 03: On 01/12/2013 a suspicious engine dinghy was spotted near LOP Tillan Chong by the Police patrol party. The dinghy sped towards open sea after signaled to stop by Police team. Braving the rough sea, a team led by SI Mohd. Iliyas consisting of Police personnel & IRBn jawans successfully apprehended the suspicious dinghy in open sea in North East of Tillan Chong Island. Ten (10) Burmese poachers were apprehended and brought to Police Station Nancowry. Huge quantity of HSD oil, sea food preservatives, diving equipments and navigational items were recovered. Further enquiry is in progress.
Hindi Workshop for the Teachers gets underway at Carnic
A 10 days long workshop on Hindi Language for GTT Hindi teachers began at the Conference Hall of the Education Office at Car Nicobar yesterday. Inaugurating the Workshop, the Assistant Commissioner Mr. Amit Kumar hoped that the workshop would give opportunity to devise strategy in language teaching, keeping in mind the existing environment of the locality.
The Principal of the Govt. SSS. Malacca Smti Sangeeta Chand while welcoming the Guests said that there are a lot of challenges in teaching languages in the Schools of this region. She called upon the Teachers to make use of the Workshop so that the language teaching in the Schools can be made more effective.
Talking about the activities of the Central Hindi Institute, Prof. Hemraj Meena from Central Hindi Institute Cnetre Bangalore said that apart from conducting the workshops on Hindi, the Institute offers many Courses also. He informed that around 8 thousands foreigners have learnt Hindi so far through the different courses. Mr. Meena said the Institute has also taken the responsibility of translating the Literatures of the regional languages of North East into Hindi.
Giving details about the contents of the Workshop, Professor Y. Shakuntalamma informed that the teaching in the Schools should be activity based in the present CCE pattern and the workshop would explore the possibilities of making Hindi teaching more interesting among the Students.
Dr. Anita Ganguly expressed her happiness for organising the workshop in this remote district, and hoped that they too might get the opportunity to understand the Educational Scenario of the Schools of this Tribal region.
The Education Officer Mr. H. Nathaniel was also present on the occasion.
Territorial Army Wins the Vice President Cup Football Championship
Car Nicobar, Dec 01: The Team of Territorial Army has won the 20th Vice President Cup Football Tournament played at Car Nicobar today. In a very exciting Final Match played at Bishop John Richardson Stadium this afternoon, the Army men defeated the talented team of Car Nicobar by 2-0. Both goals came in the last 5 minutes of the match. On a beautiful pass given by the left out striker Richardson, Manua the Star Player scored the lead goal. Being charged up by the goal, the TA continued building attacks and then the striker Richardson scored another goal to put his team in the driver’s seat. The TA executed their home work to perfection on the field to control the dangerous player of Carnic-B, Mahayooken throughout the game.
While giving away the Prizes to the Players the Chief Guest, DC of the district Smti Sakshi Mittal said that the district Administration is committed to ensure the Sports infrastructure in the Islands, so that the young players might get the facilities to discover their talents in Sports. Congratulating the Organisers for the successful Organization of the mega Tournament, she hoped that the young players would bring laurels to the Islands at the National and International Sports arena. Addressing the Players the Special guest, Director Sports Shri Lucas Robert called upon the young Players to strive hard to bring back the glory of the past, achieved by the Sportsmen of the yesteryears. He informed that the Department is trying to get a National level Coach of Football to Car Nicobar, this month, to train the young Players at Car Nicobar. The Chief Guest felicitated the Ex- International Footballer Shri Thomas Khushboo and Shri Shri Valentine Chinda for their achievement.
Manua of the Territorial Army was declared the Best Player of the Tournament, whereas the award of the Best Goal keeper was given to Ambrose of the Little Andaman Team. Rinsu George of Rangat team was felicitated for scoring the fastest goal of the Tournament. Mahayooken George of Carnic-B was given the prize of the highest Scorer and the Young Promising Player Award went to Michel of Carnic-B. Rangat was declared the most disciplined team.
During the interval, cultural Programmes were presented by the students of Govt. PS Jayanti and the Lapathy youths. Earlier welcoming the Guests the Vice Chairman and the Education Officer Shri H. Nathaniel informed that this time total 14 teams from the different parts of the Islands had come to participate in this Tournament.
Expressing her Gratitude towards the various departments for their support in organizing the Tournament, the Principal of Govt. SSS. Malacca Smti Sangeeta Chand had special words for the media, specially the All India Radio News, Echo of India, Andaman Chronicle and the daily Telegrams for the exclusive coverage given to the Tournament. Vice President of India Cup Soccer Tournament :::: Carnic-B, Territorial Army, AN Police and Little Andaman enter into Semifinals
Car Nicobar, Nov 29: The teams of Car Nicobar-B, Territorial Army, Andaman Nicobar Police and Little Andaman have entered into Semifinals of the 20th Vice President of India Cup Football Tournament being played at Car Nicobar. In the last league match round played today at the Bishop John Richardson Stadium Tamaloo, the Strong Carnic B team thrashed Diglipur by 11-0, registering the biggest win of the Tournament so far. Mahayooken scored 8 goals alone and thus became the highest Scorer of the Tournament in the league round with an individual tally of 13 goals. Lot and Davis scored one goal each in the match.
The most awaited match between Territorial Army and the young boys of Sports Authority of India finished goalless. Both the teams tried hard and built threatening attacks but could not convert it into goals.
The SAI executed their plans effectively to prevent the most dangerous Player of TA, Manua to attack. Manua developed many attacks but could not penetrate the strong wall of defence of SAI. However due to having better goal average in the league round, the TA team found itself lucky to enter into the Semifinal.
The match played between Andaman Nicobar Police and the defending Champion Carnic-A was the most thrilling encounter of the day. Nicolas of Police team succeeded in scoring the lead goal in the first half but soon after Norbet of Carnic-A fired the equalizer. In the second half too tough contest was seen and Roberto Baggio of Police did not miss the Penalty kick chance and scored the winning goal. Both the teams struggled to dribble the ball effectively due to rain and wet field. Hundreds of Football fans turned up today to enjoy this match inspite of rain.
In the last match played at the Mus ground, the talented young Little Andaman team defeated Nancowry comfortably by 4-0 and secured their berth in the Semifinals. Monish scored hatrick for the winners.
In the first Semifinal tomorrow, Territorial Army will play against Little Andaman at 12.30 PM at BJR Stadium and in the second Semifinal AN Police will clash with Local Favourites Carnic –B at 2 PM at the same venue.
Emergency exit door of Pawan Hans helicopter falls off

Port Blair, Nov 20: The Passengers travelling by Pawan Hans Helicopter from Campbell Bay to Port Blair had a narrow escape today when the emergency exit door of the helicopter broke off in mid way during the flight. According to reports no passengers or pilot sustained any kind of injuries. The helicopter made an emergency landing at Chowra Island at about 11:30 Am IST.
Andaman Sheekha contacted Mr. N Ravichandran, Officer-in-charge (Operations), Directorate of Civil Aviation to know more about the Incident. Mr Ravichandran informed us that the reasons for the incident are not known till now. “It could be a passenger’s fault or a technical snag,” he said.
Mr. Ravichandran added that a team of engineers from Mumbai are arriving tomorrow and after they submit their report the real reason will come out. He further informed that the helicopter was on its way from Campbell Bay to Car Nicobar when the incident took place.
When asked about the precautions that they are planning to take to avoid such incidents in future he informed Andaman Sheekha that the Civil Aviation and Pawan Hans are taking necessary precautions and maintenances are also carried out regularly. “Accident like this, doesn’t happen usually,” he said.
When we asked about the pilots and the passengers onboard he said that the pilots were brought to Port Blair today while the passengers were shifted to Car Nicobar soon after the Accident. He further added that soon after the incident another helicopter was deployed for Chowra Island for shifting the passengers to Car Nicobar.
Rally at Campbell Bay to Demand Domicile for A & N Islands

Port Blair, Nov 20: To raise the voice for the reservation for locals in the Govt. Jobs in Andaman and Nicobar Island, Voice of Islanders conducted a rally in the southernmost Island of India, Great Nicobar.
The rally was reported to be the first rally of Voice of Islanders. Nearly two thousand (2000) people participated in the rally which started off from Campbell Bay Community Hall and halted for a public meeting at Jetty Bazaar in Campbell Bay.
The members of the Voice of Islanders told Andaman Sheekha that they are planning to conduct many more rallies on this issue and the next rally is scheduled on 30th of November. The members of the Voice of Islanders informed Andaman Sheekha that if the Administration does not introduce reservation for the locals then they will call for Andaman and Nicobar Bandh and even after that if the Administration does not accept their demand they will go on indefinite hunger strike along with the school and college students from all over Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The residents of Great Nicobar Islands in one voice today demanded for the reservation for locals in Govt. Jobs and the rally turned out to be a huge success. A large gathering of unemployed youths were seen and many of the youth leaders delivered inspiring speeches to motivate the crowd.
Seaman arrested for illegally transporting liquor to Car Nicobar
Port Blair, Nov. 11: Andaman and Nicobar Police has arrested two persons for illegally transporting liquor to tribal dominated Car Nicobar Islands, where liquor is banned.
According to police K. Mani, a Seaman of MV Sentinel vessel and N. Senthil, a worker at Car Nicobar were caught red handed while illegal smuggling of liquor to Car Nicobar Island, which is home for Nicobarese Tribe of A & N Islands.
“Acting on an information a team of A & N Police was constituted and both the accused were arrested at Mus jetty while exchanging 15 bottles of IMFL brought by accused K. Mani clandestinely onboard MV Sentinel on Saturday.
A FIR was registered at PS Car Nicobar and both the accused persons were arrested. Further investigation is in progress,” Pankaj Kumar Singh the Superintendent of Police of Car Nicobar told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
Meanwhile, Nicobar Police is investigating deep to find out whether the said seaman was involved in similar crimes in past.
When asked whether some other persons are also involved in this racket as bringing 15 bottles in a passenger ships is a difficult task the SP said “We are investigating into this matter and I urge public to pass on any information regarding such activities to us,” the SP added.
ICGS Kamorta Commissioned
Port Blair, Nov 8: Indian Coast Guard Station Kamorta, the second Coast Guard station in the Nicobar group of Islands was commissioned by the Air Marshal PK Roy AVSM, VM, VSM, ADC, Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command, in the presence of Inspector General VSR Murthy, PTM, TM, Commander Coast Guard Region (A&N) and other officials from the local administration and Andaman & Nicobar Command on 07 Nov 13. The naming ceremony and unveiling of Ceremonial Lifebuoy was performed by Mrs. Ranjna Roy, President Defence Wives Welfare Association (DWWA). The station’s bell was rung in by the Rani of Nancowry, Mrs Fatima to usher in good fortune to the newly commissioned station.
The station is a part of ongoing efforts by the Indian Coast Guard to strengthen the Maritime and Coastal Security of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. ICGS Kamorta will coordinate and undertake operations towards ensuring immediate response to any distress situation, medical emergency at sea, anti-poaching operations and respond to any threat to the fragile marine environment of Nicobar Islands. The Station will also cater to the requirement of operational turnaround (OTR) for CG ship deployed in Southern Group of Islands.
In his welcome address, IG Murthy, highlighted that the Indian Coast Guard, with 89 ships and 62 aircraft, is the Fifth largest among the Coast Guards of the World. By 2018, the Coast Guard will have 150 ships and 100 aircraft in its inventory. He added that the CG assets, both ships and aircraft will be augmented in the region through basing of an additional OPV, basing of light and heavy helicopters at Port Blair and an Interceptor Boat at Campbell Bay by Oct 2014.
Speaking on the occasion, Air Marshal PK Roy AVSM, VM, VSM, ADC the CINCAN lauded the efforts of Indian Coast Guard in maintaining a high state of vigil in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands resulting in apprehension of a large number of poachers and saving of precious human lives during SAR operations. He further said that the implementation of the Coastal Surveillance Network project would be a major milestone in ensuring maritime domain awareness, through Radar Surveillance of these Islands. He also stressed the need for maintaining continuous vigil of this strategically important archipelago.
He further stated that the Indian Coast Guard had initiated several far-reaching measures to augment Coastal Security Mechanism, especially through conduct of special Community Interaction Programme and exclusive briefings at key stake-holders venue in order to ensure complete synergy among all Stake-holders.
The Coast Guard Station Kamorta will function under the administrative and operational control of the Commander Coast Guard Region (A&N) through the Commander Coast Guard District Headquarter-10 located at Campbell Bay. Commandant Ajay Kumar Mudgal is the Commanding Officer of the newly commissioned station.
Training on Nicobari Fowl Breeder Management & Poultry Hatchery Operation conducted
Port Blair, Oct 14: Animal Science Division, CARI, Port Blair organized a three days training programme from 07.10.2013 at Tamaloo Village, Car Nicobar under Tribal Sub Plan, on “Nicobari Fowl Breeder Management and Hatchery Operation” for Tribal Farming Community in collaboration with KVK and DAH & VS, Car Nicobar. Shri. Pal Benjamin, Captain of Tamaloo village was the chief guest wherein , he motivated the tribal farmers to get benefit from the programme. Dr.Bardhan SVO, AH&VS Car Nicobar , the guest of honour, narrated the available schemes for tribal youth for their benefit , described the importance of health management and vaccination in rural poultry. Shri. Newten Hardis, 2nd Headman and Shri. Meshah Hollan, 3rd Headman also spoke on the occasion.
Dr.T.Sujatha, Course coordinator, in her address, emphasized that the Nicobari fowls are about to be extinct and are in urgent need of propagation and conservation at community level. She emphasized to take up management of breeding of Nicobari fowl in backyard , nutritional management practices using locally available feed ingredients and suggested the simplified balanced feed formulae for rural poultry. She also gave knowledge on poultry incubator , its operation and management. Dr.Zachariah George, SMS, KVK ,Car Nicobar explained the importance and role of incubator in the conservation of Nicobari fowl. He described the management of breeding fowl and health of rural poultry. Mr.Chandrika Ram, SMS, KVK guided how to construct simplified house for rural poultry.
The Deputy Commissioner Mrs. Sakshi Mittal, Car Nicobar welcomed the concept of poultry hatchery operation by tribals’ to improve their nutritional security. The captain of Tamaloo village expressed satisfaction about the programme after getting feed back from the participants. Training was concluded on 9th October with distribution of certificates by the Captain to 25 tribal farmers representing from different Tuhets. The programme was conducted under the plan and guidance of Dr S. Damroy , Director , CARI for the benefit of the tribal farmers of Car – Nicobar.
Zonal level School Sports Meet begins at Car Nicobar
Car Nicobar, Oct 03: Zonal Level School Sports Meet began at Car Nicobar today at Bishop John Richardson Stadium. Inaugurating the meet the Chief Guest, Block Sports Officer Mr. Birendra Pradhan said that Nicobari Sportsmen have always made the Islands feel proud at the State level and National level Sports Competitions, by displaying their outstanding skills. He called upon the young budding talents to excel in their respective Sports event and bring laurels to the Island. He informed that the aim of the zonal level Meet is to select the best young Sports Persons, who will be representing Car Nicobar in the forthcoming State level Championship to be held in Port Blair. The Incharge Education Officer Mr. Mohammed. Hanifa too hoped that the Zonal meet would discover some good Young Sports Persons.
The Talent search Sports Programme got started with the Yoga Competitions. Though it’s a new game for the Students, but the boys surprised everybody by displaying different Yogasana with ease. The Judge of the event and Physical Education Teacher of Lapathy School Mr. Brihaspati Gharami said that the boys have shown tremendous interest in learning the skills of Yoga in the training programme which he started in his School recently. Renowned Referee and the Secretary of the Nicobar Athletics Association Mr. Thomas James had special words for the Volley ball Players. He said that the skills displayed by the small School children, is amazing.
The PET form the Malacca School Mr. Sanjay Ram told that the children of this Island have natural inclination towards Sports and they learn skills very quickly. Apart from Yoga, many good talented young Sportsmen were seen taking part in the Badminton, Table Tennis and Volley ball events. Around 200 Sports persons from all the Schools of the Zone are taking part in this Zonal Sports meet. Large number of Sports loving people of Tamaloo village and the Parents turned up today to watch the Competitions. The Meet will conclude tomorrow.
