HAVELOCK VIOLENCE UPDATE Police finds crucial CCTV footage
Port Blair, Sept 21: The recent violence at Havelock Island over death of Havelock youth, Amit Das, has left scars on the overall image of Havelock Island.
The violence in Havelock Island had erupted following death of Amit Das due to head injuries. The case has now taken an interesting turn after police found CCTV footage of the spot, where Late Amit Das had allegedly fell from police van while trying to escape from police custody.
The CCTV footage has been obtained from a Petrol Bunk of Havelock, infront of which the incident had reportedly taken place.
As per highly placed sources the CCTV footage clearly shows the Police jeep crossing the area and then suddenly coming to a halt and a few police Jawans running from one side to the other. The footage also shows head constable MM Naidu reaching the spot in two-wheeler of a dive instructor, Narayan Chander Sikder, after the incident.
The CCTV footage has made it clear that when the incident took place, the Head Constable was not there in the Jeep. As per sources the head constable had stayed back in bazaar and directed the other constable and the driver constable to take Amit Das to police station and while taking Amit Das to police station the incident happened, which is a serious negligence on the side of all three police personnel.
The incident not only resulted in internal head injuries and death of Amit Das but also triggered a massive violence in Havelock Island.
Many believe that the incident of violence could have been averted if the three police Jawans had shared all information about the incident of Amit Das falling from Jeep with their officers and taken him to hospital instead of police station.
The case is now with CID and people have full faith that the CID team will unearth the truth.
Meanwhile it has been learnt that the administration has taken the incident of violence in Havelock Island very seriously, where following instigation of a few political leaders and antisocial elements people had attacked policemen and damaged government and private properties.
There are also possibilities that the administration may take some stringent action against those who were behind instigating the public for this violence.
Meanwhile, strict police action in Havelock Island have been greatly appreciated even by prominent residents of Havelock Island, who believe that such stringent action was necessary to control the mob or more people would have suffered serious injuries.
It is noteworthy that only with the help of limited police staffs of Havelock Island a two dozen Jawans from Port Blair, the DSP Havelock, Mr. B Saigal, under the guidance of SP South Andaman, Mr. Sibesh Singh, managed to tackle the situation very professionally.
Hope the CID Department will complete the investigation soon and make the report public so that all details of this case become crystal clear.
