Port Blair, Oct 15: Thumping noise of vehicles particularly motorcycles after modification of silencers sound pollution is becoming a growing concern for legitimate road users in the city. The Andaman Sheekha Bureau is flooded with complaints from readers about the increasing trend among motorists intentionally modify silencers to get a loud peculiar sound causing nuisance for other road users.
However, the Traffic Police has failed to initiate action against motorists who resort to unlawful modification to vehicles.
“The sound from the silencers of modified vehicles are deafening causing sound pollution and entails punishment under section 190 (2) of the Motor Vehicle Act. Vehicle owners particularly Bikers and Bullet owners modify their vehicles in private workshops particularly one located at Lamba Line to get the loud sound from the silencers, which has now become a status symbol of sorts. The bikers feel it helps grab attention of the people. But the growing practice, which is a serious violation of traffic rules, is in fact severe noise pollution in the city,” said several of Andaman Sheekha readers in their complaints.
Movement of vehicles with such deafening sound has become rampant near hospitals and educational institutions. The Traffic Police should launch a special drive to book bikers with modified silencers and impose necessary penalty to send a strong warning to the motorists to desist from the unlawful practice.
