Port Blair, Jan 31: The Tylerabad Police Unit has seized a bucket of Rice Beer this morning from Birchgunj area. As per reports, the illegal business was run by a mother and son at an Agriculture Land, which they were taking care off.
It is learnt that, when the landlord found that the take carers of his land are indulged in such illegal activities, he immediately informed the Tylerabad Police Unit following which the Police team rushed the spot and arrested both the mother and son and also seized the Rice Beer.
It is learnt that both mother and son were later released on bail. Further details are awaited.
Musth Elephant “Nirash” kills Mazdoor of Forest Department

Baratang, Jan 30: A Musth Elephant has reportedly killed a Mazdoor of Forest Department namely Guran Kujur S/o Haitha Kujur aged 45 years this morning at 09:30am at Sukha Khari, South Creek, Baratang.
As per reports, just after tying the Musth Elephant “Nirash” when Guran Kujur turned to return the Musth Elephant attacked Guran Kujur with his trunk. Sources said Guran Kujur was declared dead at the Primary Health Center, Baratang.
It is learnt that a team of Forest Department under the leadership of Dr Shyam Varghese is moving to Baratang tomorrow morning, to inspect the Musth Elephant.
Ross & Smith Islands of Diglipur to remain close on 07th February

Diglipur, Jan 30: The “Creek Boat Association” of Diglipur has decided to keep the Ross & Smith Island closed on 07th February 2017.
According to reports, the association has planned to observe beach cleaning day at the above said place as part of Swatch Bharat Abhiyan. All the members of the association are going to take part in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
It is learnt that the decision of the “Creek Boat Association” is going to hamper many tourist to visit Ross & Smith Island on the day as visit to Ross & Smith Island on 07th February is already in their schedule and also many tourist has paid for the visit to Ross & Smith.
However, the early announcement will help the Tour Operators to engage the tourist at some other Tourist place.
Lt. Governor, CS & others pay rich tributes to 44 Martyrs’ of Indian Independence League
Port Blair, Jan 30: A solemn function was held at the Balidan Vedi- the State Martyrs’ Memorial at Homfraygunj on the occasion of 73rd martyrdom anniversary of 44 Martyrs of Indian Independence League (Andaman Branch), who were shot dead and buried by the Japanese forces on January 30th, 1944 for charges of espionage.
The Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi who was the chief guest of the function, placed a wreath and offered floral tributes at the Memorial, followed by floral tributes by Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Shri Anindo Majumdar, DGP, Shri Rajesh Malik, senior officers of Administration, grand children & family members of the Martyrs, prominent senior citizens from the city & Humfraygunj area and public representatives.
This was followed by the National Anthem and observance of two minutes silence by the gatherings as a mark of respect to Mahatma Gandhi and the departed souls, who laid their lives for the freedom of our motherland.
The chief guest also gave away the Martyrs Memorial Awards to the students of Govt. Middle School, Homfreygunj in honour of Martyrs: Pokhar Singh Chawla, Prem Shanker Pandey, Raj Ratan Das and Malkhan Singh, to the Head Mistress of Govt. Middle School, Humfreygunj, who received it on behalf of the students. These awards were sponsored by the families of the Martyrs.
Welcoming the chief guest and others present on the occasion, the Member, Humfreygunj Martyrs’ Memorial Committee, Port Blair, Shri V.R. Murthy briefed about the significance of the day, which also coincides with the death anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. An all religion mass prayer and Ramdhun presented by the students of Govt. Middle School, Humfreygunj formed part of the solemn function.
The Lt. Governor also visited the Humphreygunj Museum to see the work in progress.
Dr Prem Kishen re-elected as President of LBA
Port Blair, Jan 29: Dr Prem Kishen has been re-elected as the President of Local Born Association with a huge margin this evening.
The Presidential Election of Local Born Association was held today at the Netaji Hall, Aberdeen Bazaar. A total of three candidates participated in the election namely Mr Firoz Khan, Dr Prem Kishen and Mr Rama Rao.
According to reports, under the total delegates of 292 the total polling done was 240 in which Dr Prem Kishen secured 240 votes and Mr Firoz Khan and Mr Rama Rao received one vote each.
Such joint voting has anyhow revealed the unity of the Local Born Association.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Dr Prem Kishen said that his main motive will be to fight for the participation of the Local Born Association in each and every decision taken by the administration pertaining to the islands. He further said that he will also fight for the inner line permit issue.
The delegation of the Local Born Association is now consist of President, Dr Prem Kishen, Vice President Dr Roshan Ara Begum, General Secretary, Liyakat Ali, Joint Secretary, Jag Narayan, Oragnising Secretary, Mr Mahendar Pal, Samsuddin and Anil Roy, Treasurer, Shankar Rao, Chairman & Board of Trustee, Om Prakash and other 20 executive members.
Motorcycle collides with SUV at Diglipur; one dead

Diglipur, Jan 29: A motorcycle rider namely Sukhchand Das, 35 years was killed after colliding with a Tata Safari Jeep yesterday at Tal Bagan area of Diglipur. The reason behind the accident is not yet known.
As per reports, the people present on the spot of the accident immediately rushed the Motorcyclist to the nearby Kishori Nagar PHC from where the Motorcyclist was referred to the CHC Diglipur. However due to severe injuries the Motorcyclist succumbed to his death.
Diglipur Police Unit has registered a case in this regard and further inquiry is on.
Two King Cobra snakes rescued

Port Blair, Jan 29: A team of snake squad, Forest Department, yesterday rescued two King Cobra snakes from two different parts of the city.
As per reports, on complaint of a King Cobra received from a resident of Dollygunj ITI Quarter at around 02:30pm, Deputy Ranger Mr Manjit Singh and his team immediately reached the spot and rescued the King Cobra Snake that was 3 meter long and 4kg in weight.
Similarly, on complaint of a King Cobra Snake at 04:15pm from a temple situated at Gref, Chakkargaon the same team reached the spot and rescued a 3.5 meter long King Cobra Snake weighing around 4kg.
CID team seizes huge quantity of Banned Tobacco Products
Port Blair, Jan 29: A team of CID Unit has seized more than 5 Kilogram of Banned Tobacco Products from two persons of Dairyfarm Area.
Following a tip off, the CID Unit conducted a raid at the house of Parsaiya and Gopal both residents of Dairfarm and seized around 1,153 small packets of Tobacco Leaf and huge quantity of Zarda. It is learnt that CID Unit has handed over the Banned Tobacco Products to the Food Safety Unit, Port Blair.
Relay Hunger Strike by ASNVMS called off after meeting with Chief Secretary
Port Blair, Jan 25: The Relay Hunger Strike in front of the office of the Chief Engineer, APWD at Port Blair and in front of the offices of APWD at various outstations has been called off today evening following the discussion the leaders of Andaman Sarvajanik Nirman Vibhag Mazdoor Sangh (ASNVMS), affiliated to CITU, had with Mr. Anindo Majumdar, Chief Secretary, A & N Administration today evening. During the discussion, the Chief Secretary explained in detail the steps taken by the Administration to extend the benefit of 1/30th of pay plus DA scheme of the Govt. of India to the daily rated mazdoors working under the APWD.
The Chief Secretary informed the delegation of the Union that the Lt. Governor was kind enough to agree to the proposal to extend the said benefit to the daily rated mazdoors working in various Divisions under the APWD. The Union delegation was informed by the Chief Secretary that the administrative formalities for issuing the order extending the said benefit to the daily rated mazdoors of APWD are in full-swing and the benefit will be extended with effect from 1st April, 2017.
The Union conveyed its gratitude to the Lt. Governor and Mr. Anindo Majumdar, Chief Secretary for the favourable steps taken by them in this matter. The Union also conveyed its gratitude to Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, MP for his intervention in the matter.
The Govt. of India, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (Department of Personnel & Training) during 1988 has formulated a scheme under which the Daily Rated Mazdoors working in government will be given the wages computed on the basis of 1/30th of pay plus DA at the relevant scale of pay. The ASNVMS has been pursuing this demand with the Administration and APWD during the last 3 – 4 years to extend the said benefits to the 4000 daily rated mazdoors who were serving the APWD for period ranging from 15 years to 5 years, and had conducted a series of agitations during these years.
Major Fire averted by NSRY Fire Unit
Port Blair, Jan 25: Quick response by Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY) of Andaman & Nicobar Command averted major disaster today.
According to detail at around 1.00 pm major fire erupted from a private cargo truck outside Delanipur Gate of HQ ANC
Taking no time Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY) Fire Tender reached the spot on time and controlled the fire.
