Port Blair, July 30: A molestation case has been registered at Tylerabad Police Station this Friday by a Youth.
According to the youth his fiancée was molested by three men at Bada Balu beach when he went to the beach with her fiancée.
As per sources, three youths reached the Bada Balu Beach in a SUV when they saw the couples at the beach.
Sources further said that all the three youths started inquiring the couples acting as if they were Police Personnel but soon they started molesting the girl.
Sources also said that when the youth tried to protect her fiancée from the accused they started beating him with the Helmet of the Youth.
All the three youths have been arrested Under Section 354 IPC for molestation and Under Section 419 IPC for giving a false identity. All the three accused are now in the Judicial Custody.
Murder at Tylerabad; Man chops off wife’s head

Port Blair, July 23: In yet another shocking incident, a man today reportedly chopped off his wife’s head at Tylerabad village.
According to information the incident took place this evening at Tylerabad village, near Tylerabad Primary School. As per sources the couple had some disputes in family since a long time. Sources said that the victim, namely Shanu Devi, aged 35 years died on the spot after the attack while the attacker husband, P.Mohammed, was arrested by police. The family reportedly owns a private bus called Shanu Travels.
“Swachh Sagar Abhiyan” by Indian Coast Guard
Port Blair, July 09: Indian Coast Guard conducted a beach clean-up drive at Wondoor Beach on 08 Jul 17 towards government of India flagship programme “Swachha Sagar Abhiyan”. The service has been effectively contributing not only towards Prime Minister’s visionary step of clean India campaign but also has taken step towards “Swachha Sagar Abhiyan” through putting efforts towards beach clean ship in these pristine Islands. Under this program, various Coast Guard ships and establishments in Port Blair are undertaking beach clean up on every Saturday. The event was conducted on 08 Jul 17 from 1500 hrs to 1700 hrs by Indian Coast Guard personnel where in approximately 400 mtrs of beach was cleaned and about 200 kgs of garbage collected, which was further handed over to PBMC for disposal. The time was selected during low tide so as to have maximum area of beach available for cleaning. The event was witnessed and applauded by locals and tourists. The beach looked cleaner on completion of the clean up drive. Coast Guard Region (A & N) is poised to realize the goals of “Swachha Bharat Abhiyan” and will continue to contribute towards their national dream. Husband attacks wife with Machete

Port Blair, May 05: A 58-60 year old man a resident of Rangachang near Animal Husbandry Office attacked his wife with a Machete yesterday at 10:00 pm after a family dispute.
According to sources, the man was under heavy influence of liquor at the time, he attacked his wife.
The wife of the man suffered major injuries on her neck following which she was immediately rushed to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital. It is learnt that the accused husband was arrested today by a Team of Pahargaon Police Station.
The victim is said to be very critical and presently she is in surgical ICU of the Hospital.
Roads declared one way for all vehicles
Port Blair, May 04: It is inform to all the general public that the Notification issued by Additional District Magistrate, South Andaman vide No. 9-170/LS-10/PF-II/354 dated 09/01/2017, due to increase the vehicular traffic in the Port Blair Municipal area. The following road sides are declared “One Way” to all vehicles which is as follows.
1. Road leading from Ratnam Market to Ganesh Temple with entry from Ratnam Market side and exit near Ganesh Temple Aberdeen Bazar for all type of vehicles.
2. Road leading from Ratnam Market to Hindi Sahitya Kala Parishad with entry near from Ratnam Market side and exit near Hindi Sahitya Kala Parishad for all types of vehicles.
3. Road leading near Head Post Office to Dr. Diwan Singh Gurudwara entry near from Head Post Office and exit near Dr. Diwan Singh Gurudwara for all type of vehicles.
4. Road leading from Hanuman Temple to Faizabad Store via Employment Exchange with entry from Hanuman Temple side and exit near Faizabad store for all type of vehicles.
Hence, in view of road safety measures and it is requested to all the general public to co-operate with the Traffic Police for strict enforcement of above mentioned order.
Special drive against bootleggers, 119 liters of country made liquor seized, 8 arrested
Port Blair, May 04: Observing zero tolerance towards the menace of distillation of illicit liquor and illegal sale of IMFL in South Andaman jurisdiction, a team of Police Station Pahargaon comprising SI Silpi Singha, Head Constable P.Babu Rao, Constables Bhasker Rao, RS Rakesh, RK Paul, Chiranjeev Rao, Sameer Minj & Vijay Ram conducted incessant raids at several places at Attam Pahad, Dolly Gunj and Brookshabad area and recovered 119 liters of country made liquor along with 08 bottles of IMFL. Cases of violation of Excise regulation were registered at PS Pahargaon and accused namely (1) Vijay Lall, (2) Prem Sheel Devi, (3) Shukra all residents of Brookshabad and (4) Charka Mahato (5) Aqkli Devi, (6) MK Moorthy, (7) John Gudai and (8) K.Venkatesh all residents of Dollygunj/ Attam Pahad were arrested on the spot.
The entire operation was done under the command of Inspr. Sahil Shamsuddin, SHO Pahargaon under the overall supervision of Shri. Nishant Gupta, DySP South Andaman.
The general public is requested to keep surveillance over the movements of newcomers/strangers in their respective locality and pass on information pertaining to such illegal activities by unscrupulous and anti-social elements on the following telephone numbers 233077, 232405, 232400, 250525, 232232 & 100. The identity of the informer will be kept secret.
Five local poachers apprehended by South Andaman Police from Jarawa Reserved Area
Port Blair, May 02: The South Andaman Police have arrested 05 local poachers namely (1) M. Bhaskar Rao (55yrs) R/o Junglighat, (2) A. Raja Rao (38yrs) R/o Dairy Farm, (3) V. Rama Rao (48yrs) Fisherman R/o Junglighat, (4) V. Appa Rao (37yrs) R/o Junglighat & (5) E. Guraiah (44yrs) Fisherman R/o Junglighat at Bada Balu for entering illegally and indulging in fishing activities in the Jarawa Reserved area on 25/04/2017. The Police have also seized 01 No. Engine Dinghy and 01 No. Oars Dinghy from the possession of arrested persons.
Later, the 05 arrested persons and the seized articles were brought to PS Ograbraj and they were booked under relevant sections of law. The whole operation was conducted under the close direction and guidance of Shri M.A. Naushad, SDPO (Bambooflat).
The general public especially the fishermen community is requested to refrain themselves from entering into or indulging in fishing activities in the prohibited areas (Jarawa Reserved Areas) failing which legal action will be initiated against them. Any information in this regard may be passed on to Police Control Room (Ph: 100, 232100) or PMF Control Room (1093, 239247) and identity of the informer would be kept secret.
Murder or Road Accident ??: Unidentified vehicle drags Baratang man for 4 km after hitting him

Diglipur, Apr 26: In yet another case of gruesome crime from Diglipur region of North Andaman an unidentified body was found from ‘11 family’ village junction at around 11 pm yesterday. According to information the body had several scratch marks all over the body which suggest that the body was dragged to a long distance by an unidentified vehicle, which left tyre marks on the road.
As per detail police team which reached on the spot found the mark of dragging of the body from Bashadeck area to ‘11 family’ village junction, which is nearly 4 km in distance. Police believe the accident took place somewhere at 9.00 pm yesterday.
Police is carrying out investigation in this regard and till the culprits are caught, it is hard to say whether it was an accident or a gruesome murder. As per details the deceased is nearly 40 years old and a resident of Baratang region but exact identity is not yet known.
Seminar on ‘processing & product diversification of fruits’ begins: CS calls for making result oriented plans for growth of Horticulture in Isles
Port Blair, Mar 24: A two- days’ state level seminar- cum -exhibition on ‘Processing & Product Diversification of Fruits’, got underway in the conference hall of DBRAIT today. The Chief Secretary, A & N Administration, Shri. Anindo Majumdar as chief guest lighted the traditional oil lamp which marked the inauguration of the seminar. Dr. Wasakha Singh Dhillon, Assistant Director General, Horticulture Science, New Delhi graced the occasion as guest of honour while Shri. Ramesh Verma, Secretary (Agri.) presided over the function. The High Value Agriculture Development Agency organized the seminar in association with Directorate of Agriculture and National Horticulture Mission, Port Blair.
The Retd. Sr. Scientist, Dept. of Ground Water, Jodhpur, Dr. D.D Ozha is also attending the seminar and will deliver speech on hi-tech horticulture farming for improving socio-economic status and their impact on income generation.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Secretary appreciated the Secretary Agriculture for conducting the seminar which, he said, is aimed at educating Islands’ farmers to improve production of Horticultural crops and creating awareness about importance of processing and product diversification. The Chief Secretary called upon the officers of the Agriculture Department and Scientist of CIARI to come out with result oriented plans for the growth of Horticulture. The farmers have to be motivated to go for horticulture crops apart from the areca nut cultivation which they are very fond of, he observed. The Chief Secretary underlined the need for taking advantage of KVK’s functioning in Islands for transfer of technology and agro – extension activities to the farmers. He also urged for providing good quality planting materials to the farmers so that they get good yield out of it.
The Chief Secretary also advocated for propagating about organic farming, which has already been taken up by the farmers in Neil and Little Andaman, in all other Isles too. He also urged for arranging capacity building and continuous exposure for officers of Agri and CIARI scientists at National and International level besides exposure visit for farmers to know about the new farming techniques taking place at mainland.
In his address as the guest of honour, Dr. Wasakha Singh Dhillon, Assistant Director General, Horticulture Science, New Delhi, while giving an overall agriculture scenario, stated that horticulture is developing very fast and food grain productivity has increased. This, he said, is a good sign as far as the Agriculture Sector is concerned.
The ADG further stated that nutrition security is possible only through horticulture. “We have to increase the productivity of fruits to feed the population which, he said, always contributes towards nutrition security. Pointing towards transfer of technology, the ADG said transfer of technology is very essential for Agriculture growth. KVKs and other agencies must be utilized for transfer of technology and it must be ensured that at least 60 percent of the technology reaches to the farmers.
Presiding over the seminar, the Secretary (Agri)/ Vice Chairman, HVADA, Shri Ramesh Varma informed that Islands’ climate is ideal for taking up horticulture and farmers are being motivated to take up Horticulture activities. Seminar on ‘Processing & Product Diversification of Fruits’ will help the farmers to know about post harvest management, value addition of fruit crops and how to arrest wastage of horticulture produce.
The Director, Agriculture, Shri AK Das proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the inaugural session. Resource persons from mainland, Scientist from Research and Development, Agriculture Extension Officers, NGOs, SHGs, entrepreneurs and progressive farmers are participating in the seminar which will conclude with field visits and a valedictory function tomorrow (Mar 25).
As part of the programme, a field visit to Organic Horticulture Farm, Sippighat, Integrated Coconut Processing Unit & Albert Agro Pvt. Ltd. Mithakhari (Noni processing unit) will be conducted on the second day.
Symposium on ‘Tsunami 2004- Memories and Lessons’ held: Disaster risk reduction remains primary objective of A&N Administration: LG
Port Blair, Mar 17: The Directorate of Disaster Management, A&N Administration conducted a daylong symposium on ‘Tsunami – 2004 ‘Memories & Lessons’, in the Conference Hall of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Dollygunj today. The Lt. Governor, A & N Islands, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi as the chief guest, inaugurated the symposium by lighting the traditional oil lamp. The Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Shri Anindo Majumdar, the Adhyaksha Zila Parishad South Andaman, Shri Jaydeep Kumar Dey, Principal Secretary & Relief Commissioner, Shri Raajiv Yaduvanshi, the former Chief Secretaries of A&N Administration, S/Shri V.V Bhat and DS Negi, former Relief Commissioner, Shri Puneet Goyal, senior officers of the Administration and officers who had performed exceptionally well in handling the situation and providing relief after the catastrophe of Tsunami – 2004 attended this symposium. In the beginning, a one minute silence was also observed in memory of the people who lost their lives during the tsunami of 2004.
Addressing the gathering, the Lt Governor, while offering his heartfelt prayers to all the families who have lost their loved ones during this tragedy, said, the tragic Tsunami of 2004 brought this small archipelago of A&N Islands into the eyes and hearts of millions of people worldwide.
Appreciating the dedicated efforts made by the officers of the Administration during and after the Tsunami, he said, many officers who rendered their services during Tsunami are present here with us for sharing their experiences, memories and lessons that they learnt.
The Lt Governor said, adversities not only bring people together and open up challenges on human limitations but it also provides us opportunity to identify people who performed beyond their call of duty at the crucial time and raise their work to the level of true worship.
Referring to the relief and rescue operations, the Lt Governor said, the Armed Forces, Administration, NGOs and others joined in rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts of unprecedented proportions, the results of which are before us today. The destroyed or damaged infrastructures have been rebuilt, in much stronger and better way, he said, adding that the best way to plan the way ahead is to look back and learn from our experiences. Appreciating the initiatives of the Chief Secretary, Shri Anindo Majumdar for convening this seminar and inviting some of the key persons who played pivotal role in those days, the Lt Governor said, their views will be the guideposts for our Directorate of Disaster Management. He also appreciated Shri Anindo Majumdar for coming to the Islands as a volunteer to join the rescue and relief operations, post tsunami and working in the worst affected areas. He also mentioned about Dr MM Kutty, IAS, who came and assisted the then Lt Governor in relief and rehabilitation works in these Isles.
He also expressed happiness that the Directorate of Disaster Management is taking initiative to equip all the establishments, Departments, non-governmental organizations and other stake holders for timely disaster response. He hoped that the Directorate, in co-ordination with other Departments of the Administration would be able to mitigate the impact of any disaster.
The Lt Governor further said that to have a proper strategy for disaster reduction, the Administration has adopted a holistic, positive and technology-driven strategy by promoting values of prevention, mitigation, preparedness and response. He emphasized that disaster risk reduction remains the primary objective of the Administration.
Mentioning about the preparedness, he pointed that despite the best preparedness and highest response standards, disasters, both manmade and natural, remain a challenge to mankind. To capture information about all incidents; hazardous situation that occurs daily in and around these Islands, a State Emergency Operation Centre has been established with State- of- the- Art communication facility which is functioning 24×7, he informed the gathering.
The Lt Governor further disclosed that to augment better information and communication network, the Administration has taken up major initiatives under which 10 Automated Weather Stations have been set up at all the Helipads in coordination with ISRO and data is being gathered for smooth navigation of our helicopters. Further, 35 locations have already been identified by the Administration in coordination with Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad for installing GPS strong motion Sensors to collect the data related to movement of Earth, he said.
He also informed that the Administration has already taken up with Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi for commissioning of Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) in these Islands, the land for which has been allocated.
The IMD has assured that in the second phase of their plan, they will be installing the DWR in these Islands. This will help forecasting of Weather in an accurate manner as these Islands are also prone to Hydro-Meteorological disasters, he said. Apart from this, the Administration has also signed a tri- partite agreement with INCOIS, BSNL, Port Blair for setting up of Automated Tsunami Sirens along with 35 GPS observatories for disseminating Tsunami Sirens by centrally triggering it from the State Emergency Operation Centre, the Lt Governor informed.
Concluding his speech, the Lt Governor said “I am hopeful that the symposium on ‘Tsunami-2004: Memories & Lessons’, would be fruitful and deliberations of the delegates and the resource persons during various sessions of the symposium would be insightful”. A compilation of the deliberations will be useful handbook for the Directorate of Disaster Management in planning their future strategies, said the Lt Governor.
In his address on occasion, the Chief Secretary, A & N Administration, Shri Anindo Majumdar recalled the tragedy of Dec, 26, 2004, the massive Tsunami which struck the Islands and other parts of neighboring countries. He also narrated about the relief and evacuation process and the various contributions made by the team led by Shri V.V.Bhatt (former Chief Secretary, A&N Administration). He said the whole team galvanized into action with the cooperation of defense forces, police, civil societies, IRBn, CISF and other agencies despite limited resources and no relief aid from International Organizations, unlike other countries. He also highlighted the rehabilitation process which was executed excellently by the team led by Shri DS Negi (former Chief Secretary, A&N Administration). The Chief Secretary also acknowledged the contributions made by many unsung heroes during the time of disaster and said, it was concerted efforts from all quarters. The Tsunami of 2004 brought out the leadership qualities among people and they were united in all their efforts, he said.
About the symposium, he said, memories of the past need to be recalled to an extent that it guides us in the future and this seminar will focus on what the Administration did, what it could have done and what it should do in the future.
Highlighting the journey post 2004, the Chief Secretary remarked that we have traversed a long journey. A lot of developments have taken place and a fully fledged Department of Disaster Management came into effect from 2009-10 onwards. Besides, infrastructure developments, communication set ups were improved, SEO centers have been set up in Port Blair and six other locations of Isles which are interlinked with the support of INCOIS besides hotlines and VSATs have been strengthened and with the help of INCOIS, the Administration is monitoring the events of the Islands on timely basis.
He further added that capacity building training has also been strengthened and NDRF has stationed a team of 45 persons to help during emergency. Apart from this, each Department has been strengthened internally and is working in coordinated efforts besides awareness campaign and mock drills are being conducted from time to time.
Mentioning that the Islands lies in the seismic zone, the Chief Secretary stressed that response to disaster and mobilization of people needs to be tested time and again so that we are fully prepared for any untoward incidents. Mentioning about cyclone ‘Vardha’ which stuck the Islands in the recent past, the Chief Secretary remarked that it gave an opportunity for the Administration to test its preparedness and response to disaster which was done reasonably well. However, he added, certain shortcomings came to fore and more efforts need to be put for mitigating future instances. He highlighted the need to have a broader and bolder understanding of different types of disaster and to integrate the best in technology, adding that human elements, along with feeling of commitment should continue. He expressed hope that the timely symposium would yield effective outputs leading to an action plans which will be a guiding force for the Administration to be prepared to meet future exigencies.
During the first session, a documentary on disaster management activities in A&N Islands and a presentation on vulnerability, preparedness, response, mitigation and capacity building was made by the Directorate of Disaster Management. This was followed by views, observations and suggestions of the delegates.
