Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 06: Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, met the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration today and discussed several crucial issues pertaining to the development of the Islands. Key topics included the early conduct of DPC and State Plan Board meetings, identification of roads connecting harbor jetties and ports for National Highway declaration, finalization of priority roads, bridges/culverts to construct under the CRF fund, supply of DAP and neem-coated urea to farmers, urgent survey and repairs of harbor jetties, utilization of vacant urban land for tourism development and resolving land conversion issues. The Chief Secretary assured the MP that these matters are under active consideration by the A&N Administration and efforts are being made to address them promptly.
Anganwadi Workers and Helpers in A&N Observe Foundation Day of AIFAWH with Union Meetings across the Islands”
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 06: Andaman & Nicobar Anganwadi Workers & Helpers Union (CITU) has organised meetings of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers at various parts of the union territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands today (6.1.2025) to observe the Foundation Day of All India Federation of Anganwadi Workers & Helpers (AIFAWH).
The main programme was organised at Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali, Port Blair. R. Surendran Pillai, President, CITU State Committee inaugurated the programme which was attended by a large number of Anganwadi Workers & Helpers of Port Blair Urban Project. He called upon the Anganwadi Workers & Helpers to strengthen the Union in order to fight for the demands already raised by the Federation at the national level.
Addressing the gathering, D. Ayyappan, Vice President, CITU State Committee briefly explained the formation of the AIFAWH in 1989 and subsequent struggles conducted under it all these years on various demands of the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers. He said that whatever benefits the Anganwadi Workers & Helpers are getting in the country including these islands, it was because of the relentless struggles of the CITU-affiliated Anganwadi unions.
Geeta Devi, President, A & N Anganwadi Workers & Helpers Union presided over the function. R. Anbukkarsi, General Secretary also addressed the gathering.
Island Tourism Festival in Nancowry Showcases Rich Cultural Heritage and Local Traditions
Nancowry, Jan. 6:The picturesque Nancowry sub-division came alive as it hosted a vibrant Island Tourism Festival (ITF), 2024 yesterday at Indira Park, Kamorta, celebrating the rich cultural heritage, natural beauty and diverse traditions of the region. The event was graced by Shri Pravesh Ranjan Jha, Director (Shipping), A&N Administration, as the chief guest, and Shri Aditya Sangotra, Assistant Commissioner, Nancowry, as the guest of honor. Commanding Officers of INS Kardip and Indian Coast Guard, along with Chief Tribal Captain, Nancowry, Ms. Ayesha Majeed, were also present on the occasion.
A large gathering of enthusiastic crowd consisting of young and old, men and women from distant villages alike gathered to soak in the festivity of evening at the ground. The lights and music created a heavenly atmosphere, making it a moment to remain embedded for a long time in the minds of the people. The festival displayed an array of colorful performances by local groups and school children alluring the audiences with their diverse performances and sparkling costumes displaying a gem of local traditions and culture. In addition to cultural performances, stalls of various Departments of A&N Administration like Agriculture, Veterinary, Health, Fire Service and Rural Development were in display spotlighting on various initiatives of the Government, serving as a centre for knowledge and awareness. The events displayed Fire dance, Stick Fight and bamboo dance – a local art form of tribal communities of Nancowry group of Islands. The night shone brighter with performance of students from various schools viz. GMSSS Goal Tikery, GMSSS Kamorta, GMSSS Champin along with performance of Kamorta melodies and group dances and folk songs by various villages and communities of the Nancowry group of Islands.
The programme began with a ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by welcome address by Shri Mohammed Yunus M, Nodal Officer (ITF)/BDO Nancowry. The Assistant Commissioner, Nancowry, delivered the key note address in which, he outlined the key initiatives being taken up by the Administration and sought the support of the tribal leaders and villagers.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest congratulated the organizers for hosting the festival with all grandeur and participation. He assured the support of the Administration in addressing the issues of the region.
As a precursor to the main ITF event, various traditional games like tug-of-war, arm wrestling and coconut de-husking and grating competitions were conducted village wise with an aim to mobilize large crowd from distant and remote villages. The participating teams were led by the respective Village Captains.
The participants were felicitated by the chief guest and dignitaries, appreciating their efforts to putting forward vibrant and colorful programmes for all the people of the Nancowry Island. The ITF curtain closed leaving behind trails of happiness, joy and unforgettable memories for the people. The event was a grand success, leaving everyone with cherished memories and a sense of pride in their heritage.
SHG New Year Mela Achieves Remarkable Success with Over Rs. 17 Lakh Sales
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 6:The Self Help Group (SHG) New Year Mela, held at Marina Park, concluded with remarkable success, drawing enthusiastic participation from the public and SHGs alike. About, 100 SHG members showcased a diverse range of local products, including handicrafts, coconut oil, soaps, various fast foods, and South Indian cuisines, culminating in an impressive total sales figure of Rs.17,43,100.
The event was organized by the Andaman Nicobar Islands National Rural Livelihood Mission (ANIRLM) under the aegis of Rural Development Department, A&N Administration. The Mela provided an invaluable opportunity for SHG members to exhibit their products, enhance their market presence, and increase their earnings.
The ANIRLM and the RD Department have played a pivotal role in providing this platform for SHG members, enabling them to showcase their skills and entrepreneurial spirit. Their support has been crucial in empowering SHGs and fostering sustainable livelihoods, marking the event as a resounding success for the SHG community.
The SHGs participating in the Mela expressed their gratitude to ANIRLM and RD Department for the opportunity to engage with a wider audience and boost their sales. The event also served as a learning experience, offering SHG members valuable insights into customer preferences and market trends.
“The Mela has opened new avenues for SHGs to expand their businesses. We are thankful to NRLM and the RD Department for this chance to grow and connect with more customers,” said the SHG members.

Block-Level Training on Rural Entrepreneurship Held in Little Andaman
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 6: The CD Block of Little Andaman organized a Block-Level Training Programme on ‘Promoting Progressive Rural Entrepreneurship Strategies in Livelihood Generation (Theme-1)’ today at the Panchayat Hall Ramkrishna Pur. This initiative was conducted under the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA) and targeted local officials, including Elected Women Representatives (EWRs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and Community Resource Persons (CRPs).
The program was inaugurated by Smti Seuli Mandal, Pradhan of Ramkrishna Pur, Little Andaman. Shri Belthazer, Block Development Officer (BDO), highlighted the training’s relevance for enhancing rural livelihoods. Smti S. Parmeswari, Block Programme Manager (BPM), emphasized the importance of women empowerment as a key aspect of the training.
Smti C. Vijya, a Domain Expert on Women Empowerment, presented the basics and the crucial role of rural entrepreneurship in livelihood generation. Shri Vishal Rao, Branch Manager, State Bank of India (SBI), Ramkrishnapur further elaborated on the empowerment of women representatives in rural areas, focusing on raising awareness about new banking schemes and policies that could benefit the community. Shri Krishna Kanata Golder, Cluster Coordinator (CC), provided insights on the strategies to promote rural entrepreneurship.
NIMHANS Conducts Psychosocial Disaster Management Training for A&N Health Professionals
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 6: The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Services, Andaman and Nicobar Administration & National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) under the Union Territory Health Mission is conducting a five days training program on ‘Psychosocial Care in Disaster Management’ for health professionals of A&N Islands.
The training program, which commenced today, aims to equip health professionals, with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide psychosocial care to individuals affected by disasters. The program will cover topics such as disaster management, psychosocial assessment, and intervention strategies for individuals and communities affected by disasters.
The training program is being attended by health professionals from various districts of A&N Islands, including Psychiatrists, Medical Officers, Clinical Psychologists & Counsellors. The training program is being conducted by Dr. Sekar Kasi, former Registrar of NIMHANS and Consultant & Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Manikappa, Associate Professor and Principal Investigator experts from NIMHANS, who have extensive experience in disaster mental health and psychosocial care.
Dr. Suja Antony, Director of Health Services, A&N Administration, inaugurated the training program and emphasized the importance of psychosocial care in disaster management.
Dr. Satyajit Halder, Joint Secretary of the National Mental Health Program, welcomed the dignitaries from NIMHANS and encouraged the participants to complete their training on psychosocial care in disaster management, emphasizing the importance of this skill set in supporting individuals and communities affected by disasters.
The training program is a part of the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), GoI to strengthen the disaster management capabilities of the health sector in the Islands. The program is expected to conclude on Jan 10, 2025.
Senior Citizens Helpline ‘Elder Line 14567’ Begins Operations in Sri Vijaya Puram
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan. 6: The Elder Line 14567 has started functioning at WCD Control Room building, VIP Road, Sri Vijaya Puram and the Helpline is dedicated to resolve issues related to senior citizens, ensuring their well-being and providing support and information. The Helpline has been initiated and funded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, Senior Citizen Division.
The scheme is being implemented through the Directorate of Social Welfare and run by Alankit Assignments Ltd. with the help of National Institute of Social Defence. The Helpline functions from 8 am to 8 pm on all days of the week.
Diglipur Residents Face Hardship as Ships with Bunk/Cabins Cease Operations, Medical Patients Worst Affected

Diglipur, Jan 05: Shri M. Rama Rao, General Secretary, Block Congress Committee, Diglipur has raised the issue of non-plying of ships with bunk/cabins like Nalanda, Sindhu, Kalighat etc. between Sri Vijaya Puram and Diglipur via Mayabunder and its consequent problems to the general public of Diglipur.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, the General Secretary said that non-plying of ships like Nalanda, Nalanda, Sindhu, Kalighat etc. with bunk/cabins is causing significant disruptions and hardships to people of Diglipur. In fact, the medical referred patients are the worst affected owing to removing the service of these vessels on this route, he said.
Referring to the sailing schedule foreshore sector between Sri Vijaya Puram and Diglipur via Mayabunder, there reportedly is no sailing of Nalanda Sindhu, Kalighat etc on this sea route between Sri Vijaya Puram and Diglipur via Mayabunder right from 22nd December 2024 to 11th January 2025, instead, MV Strait Island, MV Jolly Buoy and MV Baratang have been placed in service/sailing between Sri Vijaya Puram and Diglipur via Mayabunder; and these small boats don’t have bunk/beds and have only seats, as such the referred patients, non-referred/common patients, elderly people are suffering, as they can’t be transported by these small boats with no beds/bunk Mr. Rao decried.
The medical referred patients are suffering owing to non-availability of specialist doctors in CHC, Diglipur in one hand, and non-plying of ships with bunk/cabins like Nalanda, Sindhu, Kalighat etc. between Sri Vijaya Puram and Diglipur via Mayabunder by the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) on the other hand, as observed by the General Secretary, BCC, Diglipur.
Mr. Rao said that he would write a letter to the higher authorities of the DSS and A & N Administration in this regard for plying of with bunk/cabins like Nalanda, Sindhu, Kalighat etc. between Sri Vijaya Puram and Diglipur via Mayabunder on regular basis thereby alleviating the sufferings of the patients and passengers of Diglipur, he further added.
Protest in Togapur: Villagers Demand Retention of Government Doctors at PHC

Togapur, Jan 05: Residents of Pahalgaon village and Chainpur Panchayat staged a roadblock protest in Togapur yesterday, demanding the cancellation of recent transfer orders for two government doctors currently serving at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Togapur. The PHC is the only major healthcare facility catering to patients from Chainpur, Hanspur, and nearby areas.
Villagers praised the exceptional treatment and compassionate behavior of the two doctors, highlighting how their dedicated service has significantly improved healthcare in the region. They expressed concern that transferring these doctors would severely impact the quality of medical care provided at the PHC.
The Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman, Mrs. Nandini Maharaj, reportedly arrived at the protest site to address the situation. She listened to the grievances of the villagers and acknowledged the validity of their concerns. As per reports, Mrs. Maharaj assured them that she would raise the issue with the Health Secretary and the Director of Health Services (DHS) to seek a resolution.
Other Senior officials from Mayabunder also attended the site to maintain law and order situation during the protest. However, the villagers warned that they would wait until Wednesday for a resolution, failing which they would be compelled to escalate their protest with an even larger demonstration.
ANTCC Takes Out Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Rally
Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 05: On the instruction of All India Congress Committee (AICC), the Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee on the 04th of january, 2025 organized ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Rally,’ to protest against the BJP for insulting freedom fighters and undermining the Constitution.
The march was held under the leadership of ANTCC President Mr. Rangalal Halder and ANTCC Campaign Committee Chairman Mr. TSG Bhasker. Congressmen gathered in large numbers to raise their voice against the BJP.
The Rally started from Gandhi Bhawan and proceeded to Clock Tower and returned back where in route the Congress leaders paid floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Dr. B.R Ambedkar
The demonstrators condemned the recent remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Rajya Sabha insulting Dr. B.R Ambedkar. The Congress leaders called for the resignation of Amit Shah and reaffirmed its commitment to save Dr. B.R Ambedkar’s and Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of justice and equality.
Many Senior Leaders of Congress, AICC Members, TCC Members, BCC Members, Heads of Frontal Organizations/Departments, PRI Members and PBMC Councillors were present on the occasion.
