Mayabunder, March 01: Since the very beginning of the summer season, the water crisis in the North and Middle Andaman region has been started and the conundrum has started giving nightmares to the residents of the region.
According to the villagers, it’s the first time in history, when from the very beginning of the summer season itself, water curtailment has been started.
“Water is supplied in our area twice in a week, how anybody could manage the show, this region neither has a private party who supplies water on payment, said a resident of Mayabunder.
In Baratang region water is supplied every sixth day which is causing great inconvenience .
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mr. Shivananda Bairagi, Pradhan, Pahelgaon Gram Panchayat held the Andaman Public Works Department entirely responsible for the water crisis issue.
He said that there are several sources of water in the Mayabunder region but most of which are not utilised properly resulting in the water shortage in the area.
“Water curtailment is an issue but there are around 28 families in Pahelgaon North West and Pahelgaon South West who have not yet provided with pipeline connections even after the direction of the DC to the APWD,” said Mr. Shivananda. “Those people are traveling 02 km every day for water,” said Mr. Shivananda
However, talking to Andaman Sheekha, the District Commissioner, North and Middle Andaman, Mr. Awanish Kumar said that the N & M Andaman Administration is well equipped to tackle the situation and APWD is prepared to provide door to door water supply through tanker, he urged the public not to panic.
