Port Blair, Jan 12: The Lt Governor, Lt General A K Singh (Retd) led the islanders in paying rich tributes to Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary today which is also observed as National Youth Day. At a function held at the JNRM premises this morning, the Lt Governor offered floral tributes at the statue of Swami Vivekananda, followed by the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Adhyaksha Zila Parishad, South Andaman, Ms VK Mariyam Bibi and senior officers of the Administration.
Later, addressing a gathering at JNRM auditorium, the Lt Governor, Lt General A K Singh (Retd) called upon the youth of the Islands to draw inspiration from the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda.
The Lt Governor said Swami Vivekananda lived a short life but achieved so much in that little time. “We have to learn lessons from his life and teachings”, he said, adding that student life is the best phase of life and called upon the students to make best use of this precious time. The Lt Governor further stated, Swami Vivekananda had a special affinity to children and his slogan for student and youth was “contribute to your own self empowerment, society, area and the nation as a whole”. Character development was the main mission of Swami Vivekananda who focused on developing character of the youth throughout his life.
The Lt Governor reminded that Swamiji believed in character building for making a great nation. “If money and health is lost, one can regain it but once the character is lost that blot remains throughout your life”, the Lt Governor added.
Swami Vivekananda realized that three things are important for person to become successful. First, conviction of the power of goodness, second, absence of jealousy & suspicion and control of the ego and, third, help those who are trying and are doing good, the Lt Governor told the students.
Turning to the youth of the Islands, he said our youth should have a clear goal and an action plan to achieve them. The Islands will progress only when there is creativity among our children and ability to translate their creativity into reality, the Lt Governor said and exhorted the students to dream big and keep their goals high. He mentioned that the younger generation today works with hope of success: their mantra being –“I can, I shall and I will”.
The function was also graced by the BJP President, A & N Islands, Shri Vishal Jolly, Secretary, RK Mission, Swami Amartyananda. The programme was organized by the Department of Sports and Youth affairs, in association with Department of Education, JNRM, TGCE, BRAIT, NYK, SAI and Ram Krishna Mission.
Earlier, the Secretary Education, Shri Devinder Singh welcomed the chief guest and others present on the occasion. The function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the Director Sports, Shri Dharmendra Kumar.
