Car Nicobar, Dec 01: The Team of Territorial Army has won the 20th Vice President Cup Football Tournament played at Car Nicobar today. In a very exciting Final Match played at Bishop John Richardson Stadium this afternoon, the Army men defeated the talented team of Car Nicobar by 2-0. Both goals came in the last 5 minutes of the match. On a beautiful pass given by the left out striker Richardson, Manua the Star Player scored the lead goal. Being charged up by the goal, the TA continued building attacks and then the striker Richardson scored another goal to put his team in the driver’s seat. The TA executed their home work to perfection on the field to control the dangerous player of Carnic-B, Mahayooken throughout the game.
While giving away the Prizes to the Players the Chief Guest, DC of the district Smti Sakshi Mittal said that the district Administration is committed to ensure the Sports infrastructure in the Islands, so that the young players might get the facilities to discover their talents in Sports. Congratulating the Organisers for the successful Organization of the mega Tournament, she hoped that the young players would bring laurels to the Islands at the National and International Sports arena. Addressing the Players the Special guest, Director Sports Shri Lucas Robert called upon the young Players to strive hard to bring back the glory of the past, achieved by the Sportsmen of the yesteryears. He informed that the Department is trying to get a National level Coach of Football to Car Nicobar, this month, to train the young Players at Car Nicobar. The Chief Guest felicitated the Ex- International Footballer Shri Thomas Khushboo and Shri Shri Valentine Chinda for their achievement.
Manua of the Territorial Army was declared the Best Player of the Tournament, whereas the award of the Best Goal keeper was given to Ambrose of the Little Andaman Team. Rinsu George of Rangat team was felicitated for scoring the fastest goal of the Tournament. Mahayooken George of Carnic-B was given the prize of the highest Scorer and the Young Promising Player Award went to Michel of Carnic-B. Rangat was declared the most disciplined team.
During the interval, cultural Programmes were presented by the students of Govt. PS Jayanti and the Lapathy youths. Earlier welcoming the Guests the Vice Chairman and the Education Officer Shri H. Nathaniel informed that this time total 14 teams from the different parts of the Islands had come to participate in this Tournament.
Expressing her Gratitude towards the various departments for their support in organizing the Tournament, the Principal of Govt. SSS. Malacca Smti Sangeeta Chand had special words for the media, specially the All India Radio News, Echo of India, Andaman Chronicle and the daily Telegrams for the exclusive coverage given to the Tournament. In this week long Prestigious Tournament, total 14 teams from the different parts of the Islands took part.
