Pawan Hans helicopter makes emergency landing at Chowra Island

Port Blair, Nov 20: The Passengers travelling by Pawan Hans Helicopter from Campbell Bay to Port Blair had a narrow escape today when the emergency exit door of the helicopter broke off in mid way during the flight. According to reports no passengers or pilot sustained any kind of injuries. The helicopter made an emergency landing at Chowra Island at about 11:30 Am IST.
Andaman Sheekha contacted Mr. N Ravichandran, Officer-in-charge (Operations), Directorate of Civil Aviation to know more about the Incident. Mr Ravichandran informed us that the reasons for the incident are not known till now. “It could be a passenger’s fault or a technical snag,” he said.
Mr. Ravichandran added that a team of engineers from Mumbai are arriving tomorrow and after they submit their report the real reason will come out. He further informed that the helicopter was on its way from Campbell Bay to Car Nicobar when the incident took place.
When asked about the precautions that they are planning to take to avoid such incidents in future he informed Andaman Sheekha that the Civil Aviation and Pawan Hans are taking necessary precautions and maintenances are also carried out regularly. “Accident like this, doesn’t happen usually,” he said.
When we asked about the pilots and the passengers onboard he said that the pilots were brought to Port Blair today while the passengers were shifted to Car Nicobar soon after the Accident. He further added that soon after the incident another helicopter was deployed for Chowra Island for shifting the passengers to Car Nicobar.
