Port Blair, Feb 17: An advocacy workshop for the media persons on ‘Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI)-2012’ was held in the conference hall of the Directorate of Health Service to apprise the scribes of the arrangements being made for the first round of PPI on 19th February 2012 and the second round on 1th April 2012. The Director of Health Services, Dr. S K Paul presided over the workshop.
Speaking to the scribes, the Director expressed happiness that during the last seven to eight years, not a single case of polio has been reported in the islands. This was a result of the efforts of the Government in general and the DHS in particular in organizing PPI successfully, he said and stressed that it needs to be sustained by organizing PPI on regular interval.
Briefing the media persons of the arrangements made for the PPI rounds, the Deputy Director (Health), Dr. Avijit Roy informed that all requirements such as Oral Polio Vaccines, Vaccine carriers, ice packs and IEC materials like banners, posters, PA systems have been collected and dispatched to all institutions by special messengers for the PPI round slated on Feb. 19, 2012 and April 15, 2012. 44,000 doses of Oral Polio Vaccines (OPV) have been dispatched for the first round and 50,000 kept in stock. As many as 31,802 children of the age group 0-5 years will be immunized at 698 booths set up throughout the islands, he said adding that each booth with 4 vaccinators will immunize 50 children on the PPI day while in the next two days after the PPI day, they will conduct door to door visit to ensure that no child is left out uncovered.
