Sri Vijaya Puram, Jan 09: In its continuous efforts to safeguard and protect the flora and fauna of these islands, the Forest Department carryout patrolling in forest areas. In one such event on 07.01.2025, during routine patrolling in forest areas of Line Dera, the forest team of Garacharma Range cracked down on an illegal hooch (illicit liquor) manufacturing unit operating within a forest area. The forest team also found a fire place and collection of firewood in the area. The team destroyed the iron cask and seized a kadhai from the spot.
Such illegal activities cause harm to the environment and pose a threat to wildlife as it involves exploitation of natural resources like timber and water from the forest.
The use of fire for making hooch (illicit liquor) in forest areas is highly dangerous and significantly increases the risk of forest fires and will damage the biodiversity, harm wildlife, and release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
A forest offence case has been booked by Garacharma Range and investigation is underway.
