Mayabunder, Oct 13: The Mayabunder Bar Association has taken a strong stand in response to the ongoing deteriorating road conditions in the region. In an urgent meeting convened to address the situation yesterday, the Association passed a resolution declaring a “no work” protest, effectively suspending all court proceedings from today onwards.
The decision to initiate this protest was prompted by the lack of action and response from the authorities despite repeated pleas and representations made by the Association. The issue at hand revolves around the deplorable state of the road stretch from Rest Camp to Baratang, which has been a cause of grave concern for the local community.
As per a communication issued by the Secretary of Bar Association, Mayabunder, on September 28, 2023, the Association had submitted a representation to the Deputy Commissioner, North and Middle Andaman, urgently requesting the concerned agency to repair the damaged road portion within a week. They had warned that if their plea went unanswered, they would be left with no choice but to cease all court activities.
However, as of the meeting date, it was observed that no substantial progress had been made to improve the road conditions. Instead, the situation had worsened, with vehicles frequently getting stuck and posing serious safety hazards. Despite numerous appeals from various associations and unions, there has been a deafening silence from the authorities responsible for maintaining the road, particularly the National Highways department.
Adding to the crisis, dealers of petroleum and LPG transportation have decided not to travel on this treacherous road due to its hazardous condition. Public transportation services have also scaled down their operations, making it nearly impossible for lawyers and litigants to reach the Mayabunder Court.
In light of these circumstances, the Mayabunder Bar Association has taken the unprecedented step of suspending all court-related work, effective immediately. The Association has also resolved to explore legal avenues to hold responsible parties accountable for the dire road conditions.
A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for Monday, October 16, 2023, to review the situation and discuss further actions.
