Port Blair, Mar 16: Mrs. U Kavitha, elected councilor from Ward No. 24 of Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) has been elected as the Chairperson of PBMC today for the first year term commencing from 16th March, 2022.
The election to the Office of Chairperson, Port Blair Municipal Council for the first year term was contested between Mrs. U. Kavitha (BJP), Ward No. 24 and Mrs. Vasantha (INC) from Ward No. 12 by a secret Ballot Paper.
In the said election Mrs. U Kavitha got 15 votes while, Mrs. Vasantha got only 9 votes. The result was shocking for Congress Party as out of total 24 votes, Congress has 10 votes of Congress and one vote DMK vote and BJP has 10 BJP, 2 TDP and 1 Independent votes and as per normal calculation U Kavitha should have got only 13 votes.
After polling and Counting of the votes, the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman, Mrs. Suneel Anchipaka declared Mrs. U Kavitha (BJP) from Ward No. 24 as the Chairperson of the Port Blair Municipal Council, South Andaman (2022 – 2027) for the first year term commencing from 16th March, 2022 who won against Mrs. Vasantha (INC).
Certificate of Election was handed over to Mrs. U Kavitha and Oath of Office to the newly elected Chairperson for the first year term of the Port Blair Municipal Council was also administered by the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman.
Earlier before the election of Chairperson PBMC, Mr. Suneel Anchipaka, the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman chaired a special meeting this afternoon at around 1530 Hrs. in the conference hall of PBMC during which all the newly elected members of the PBMC were present and subsequently Oath of Allegiance was administered to all the 24 newly elected Ward Councillors of Port Blair Municipal Council for the tenure (2022-2027).
After administering of oath, the Deputy Commissioner, South Andaman initiated the process for election to the Office of the Chairperson, Port Blair Municipal Council as provided under section 14(3) of the Municipal Regulation wherein the office of the Chairperson shall be reserved for women for the first year of the municipality.
