Port Blair, May 25: Due to heavy rain and gusty wind a massive tree fell on a hut at Manglutan, Guptapara Panchayat at around 12 noon belonging to Smti Anima Paul, Ex Samiti Member.
Now the State President of Hindu Rashtra Shakti has claimed that the owner had earlier submitted multiple requests to the forest department for removing the said tree but the forest department did not take any action.
Even, the proposal for cutting the tree was passed in the Gram Sabha which was communicated to Forest, APWD & Tehsil Office.
“The result of the lethargy showed by the concerned departments is that finally the tree crashed on her house and destroyed everything. It’s quite a sorry plight that a department named Disaster Management was lost in deep slumber and the public got into action themselves in cutting the tree and moving the debris. The family is now housed in nearby anganwadi as interim arrangement by the Tehsildar, Ferrargunj,” Mr. Rakeshwar Lall, the State President of Hindu Rashtra Shakti added in his letter addressed to the Lt. Governor of an A & N Islands
Mr. Lall added that with no power and mobile connectivity, the victim family somehow communicated the matter to Mr. Prakash Adhikari a social worker and him. The HRS now requested the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands to conduct an inquiry as why the permission was not accorded for cutting the tree, which posed danger to the family even after repeated requests from the family.
In addition the HRS requested to fix the responsibility for massive loss and direct the forest department to sanction compensation or fund for rebuilding of new house. The HRS also requested the Lt. Governor to sanction compensation from the LG Relief Fund.
