Billyground, Oct 10: To know about the functioning of government schools, as a case study one must visit the Government Middle School Pinakinagar (English Medium), which falls under Harinagar Gram Panchayat.
Andaman Sheekha has photographs which show how badly things are managed in the school.
Inside the GMS Pinakinagar, there is a water tank, from which all the students and staffs drink water but photographs available with Andaman Sheekha show how dirty the surroundings of the water tank is. Often one can find frogs and other insects roaming around the water tank. To reach to the tank one has walk through soggy and marshy area. During rainy days things become further worse.
It appears that the tank has not been cleaned since ages as the tank is horribly dirty and algae have covered most of the part of the tank. Parents fear that the lone water tank can trigger an epidemic in entire Middle Andaman Region anytime.
It has been learnt that the school does not have a sweeper and for this reason the toilet blocks are in horrible condition. Situation inside the toilet block is so bad that often teachers prefer to go to open areas to respond to nature’s call than using the school’s toilet block.
The school has got a Kitchen building for preparation of Mid-Day meal but the kitchen is never used by anyone. Mid Day meal is reportedly cooked in some other place which is situated nearly 1 km away from the school. Matter does not end here the road from which the mid-day meal brought to school everyday, is an open garbage dumping ground and at any point of time one can see heaps of garbage on the both side of the road.
When asked why the school kitchen is not used for cooking mid day meal by Andaman Sheekha Correspondent, the Head Master could not given any answer.
Hopefully the Director of Education will find some time to visit all remote schools one by one before some innocent students fall victim of such negligence.
