Mayabunder, June 30: Finally, the residents of North, and Middle Andaman may hope that they will travel in a permanent Thoratang Bridge in days to come as work for Thoratang concrete bridge has been started by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) recently. As per reports, the date fixed for the contractor to finish the work is by April 2021.
Earlier on 12th June 2019, the Thoratang bailey bridge of Middle Andaman collapsed when two loaded trucks of NHIDCL contractors tried to cross the bridge together.
Surprisingly after the bridge was repaired by NHIDCL contractor after nearly one month, on 11 July 2019, the bridge again collapsed within 10 hours of the re-launching of the bridge as a result of which people had to use a longer route to reach their destinations between Billyground and Thoratang through TV Kulam Bailey Bridge. However, with efforts, another temporary but strong bridge was again constructed with hume pipes and was opened with restrictions in November last year.
