Port Blair, Sept 04: A team of Directorate of Health Services, under the direction of Dr. Abhijeet Ray, Deputy Director (health), today raided a fruit stall of Mohanpura Fruit Market and seized 50 kg of banana and 2 kg of Sapota.
The raid was conducted following a tip off received from an alert citizen, who found the fruit vendor spraying deadly pesticide on these fruits for artificial ripping.
The DHS team also seized a bottle of the harmful pesticide ‘Adipon’, allegedly being used by the fruit vendor.
“The chemical is so strong that only one drop of the chemical is used in one bucket of water and the same water is then sprayed over fruits for artificial ripening,” said an informer.
However, a case under Food Safety Act has been registered against the fruit vendor by the DHS team.
“We are sending the chemical, which is a pesticide, to CARI for chemical examination,” an official of Health Department told Andaman Sheekha today.
