It gives me great pleasure to know that “World Veterinary Day” is being observed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 28th April 2018. The theme for this year is “The role of the Veterinary Profession in Sustainable Development to improve livelihoods, food security and safety”.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands located in the midst of Bay of Bengal has a fragile ecosystem. This makes the livestock sector play a crucial role in sustainable development of rural economy.
By preventing and controlling animal diseases, veterinarians play a crucial role in securing sufficient and safe high-quality food, improving the health and welfare of people and animals. They contribute to ensure the existence of sufficient resources for future generations by supporting the development of sustainable, responsible and efficient livestock production systems.
These activities will contribute the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals such as poverty, zero hunger, good health and economic growth.
On this occasion, I extend my best wishes to the Veterinarians of this Territory in their endeavour to provide animal health care and contribute to sustainable development of the Island economy.
