Port Blair, June 30: The Education Department of Andaman and Nicobar Administration today assured that the science stream of Government Sr. Secondary School (GSSS) Port Mout will not be withdrawn after students protested, blocking Andaman Trunk Road.
Earlier the Andaman and Nicobar Administration had taken decision to withdraw science stream from GSSS Port Mout, South Andaman and GSS R K Pur, Little Andaman Islands, which triggered unrest and agitation among school students.
On Friday and Saturday students GSSS Port Mout blocked the Andaman Trunk Road, the life line of A & N Islands and demanded immediate restoration of science stream in the school, forcing the Education department of Andaman and Nicobar Administration to drop its plan.
“I am going to Little Andaman today to protest against the withdrawal of science stream from RK Pur,” the Member of Parliament of A & N Islands who had led the Port Mout Protest, told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
Meanwhile, the Director of Education Dr. R Devdass today reached the protest site and informed the agitating students to end the agitation as the Department has now dropped the plan the of withdrawing science stream from the school.
“From Monday classes for Science Stream in GSSS Port Mout will re-start and by 5th June all teachers required for science stream will be posted to the school,” Dr. R Devdass assured the students.
Yesterday a high level congress delegation along with parents had met the Commissioner cum Secretary of A & N Administration and demanded restoration of science stream in both the schools. The BJP unit of A & N Administration had also condemned the move of Education Department to withdraw science stream from these two schools.
