Port Blair, Jan 25: The Relay Hunger Strike in front of the office of the Chief Engineer, APWD at Port Blair and in front of the offices of APWD at various outstations has been called off today evening following the discussion the leaders of Andaman Sarvajanik Nirman Vibhag Mazdoor Sangh (ASNVMS), affiliated to CITU, had with Mr. Anindo Majumdar, Chief Secretary, A & N Administration today evening. During the discussion, the Chief Secretary explained in detail the steps taken by the Administration to extend the benefit of 1/30th of pay plus DA scheme of the Govt. of India to the daily rated mazdoors working under the APWD.
The Chief Secretary informed the delegation of the Union that the Lt. Governor was kind enough to agree to the proposal to extend the said benefit to the daily rated mazdoors working in various Divisions under the APWD. The Union delegation was informed by the Chief Secretary that the administrative formalities for issuing the order extending the said benefit to the daily rated mazdoors of APWD are in full-swing and the benefit will be extended with effect from 1st April, 2017.
The Union conveyed its gratitude to the Lt. Governor and Mr. Anindo Majumdar, Chief Secretary for the favourable steps taken by them in this matter. The Union also conveyed its gratitude to Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, MP for his intervention in the matter.
The Govt. of India, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (Department of Personnel & Training) during 1988 has formulated a scheme under which the Daily Rated Mazdoors working in government will be given the wages computed on the basis of 1/30th of pay plus DA at the relevant scale of pay. The ASNVMS has been pursuing this demand with the Administration and APWD during the last 3 – 4 years to extend the said benefits to the 4000 daily rated mazdoors who were serving the APWD for period ranging from 15 years to 5 years, and had conducted a series of agitations during these years.
