Port Blair, Sep 27: The Lt Governor of A&N Islands, Prof Jagdish Mukhi, has banned the use of all forms of chewing tobacco products in A&N Islands from 2nd October 2016, for a period of one year. Accordingly, a total ban have been imposed on the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale on all forms of processed/flavoured/scented chewing tobacco, whether going by the name or form of Gutka, Pan Masala, Zarda packed and unpacked/loose, tobacco leaf in any form etc; and pan masala based sugar boiled based confectionaries in the entire Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands for a period of one year from 2nd October 2016 in the interest of public health.
The ban has been imposed as tobacco is known to cause adverse impact on the health of tobacco consumers and could also lead to deadly diseases, including mouth cancer. The official order applying the ban on these products for a year, starting from 2nd October 2016 will be issued by the Commissioner Food Safety.
