Port Blair, May 24: A” continuing medical education” programme for doctors of Andaman and Nicobar Islands was organised for the GB Pant hospital doctors and private practitioners recently at Hotel TSG.Dr Ashok subramaniam ENT specialist of G.B Pant Hospital coordinated the CME programme.
Dr. Shibu Varkey , ophthalmic surgeon and chief medical officer from Vasan eyecare network, was the resource person for the meet.
He spoke on the latest developments in the field of ophthalmology. Micro incision phacosurgery through 1.8 mm incision for cataract with implantation of multifocal intra ocular lens has revolutionised the outcomes of cataract surgery. patients can now resume their activities with ease on the same day of surgery.
Femtosecond laser has made it possible for people with glass power to enjoy spectacle free life through procedure called femtosecond LASIK. For those who are unfit for LASIK new procedure called ICL has given hope to get freedom from glasses.
He also spoke on glaucoma the silent killer of vision, where it is essential for the patients to undergo regular eye screening as there are no symptoms till late into the disease and the only way it can be detected is by regular screening specifically those with risk factors like family history of glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.
Diabetic retinopathy has become a major cause of blindness in India, Unhealthy life style is the cause and all diabetics need to be regularly seen by ophthalmologists to detect this condition early. Laser photocoagulation can prevent blindness in these patients if done at the correct time. The primary care doctor has the great responsibility on educating the patients on the risks of diabetic retinopathy and referring to ophthalmologist.
He shared his expertise in these areas with videos of his surgeries.The programme was highly interactive with lively discussions and attended by 30 doctors from the city.
Dr.Shibu Varkey, a native of the Andaman islands had his education in Carmel High School and Kendriya Vidyalaya, and did his (FRCS)fellow of the Royal college of physicians and Surgeons from Glasgow(UK).
He was recently in the news for becoming the first Indian surgeon to perform the permanent eye colour change surgery, a procedure which offers hope to people with conditions like albinism, heterochromia and eye color problems due to injury or birth defects.
