Diglipur, May 15: In this male dominated place like Andaman and Nicobar Island, a girl from a remote village Diglipur, showed exceptional courage to reject her bridegroom, just one day before her marriage, when she learnt that boy is already married to someone else.
The marriage was scheduled on 13 May 2012 between Miss Bimala (name changed) of Sita Nagar, Diglipur and Mr. Kamal (name chaged) a private contractor of Billyground.
For this marriage both the sides had invited more than 1000 guests but in a dramatic turn on 12 May 2012 night, some relatives of the bride came to know that the boy Kamal is already married one year ago at Port Blair and he was living with his wife at Port Blair.
When the matter came into the light the bride took a bold decision to say to the marriage, knowing fully well that all guests have already been invited and the decision may cause several problems for her own marriage in future. Soon, parents of the girl also backed her and so did many other relatives.
When the matter became public, parents of the bridegroom reached Diglipur on 12 May night and tried to convince the bride infront of Panchayat but everybody in village supported the girl and did not agree.
To much delight of the parents of the girl, two bold and responsible youths of Diglipur area approached the Pradhan and proposed to marry the girl. The panchayat took a responsible decision and left the decision on the girl, who later choose one of the youths, Mahesh (name changed), a grocery show owner, for marriage. Finally the marriage was solemnised in a grand manner yesterday night.
This incident shows positive side of changing Island society. In remote villages of North and Middle Andaman, often girls’ opinion is never asked by parents but in this case the girl was allowed to take important decision about her life by entire village, which will remain as an example forever, for all Islanders.
