Port Blair, Sept 14: With monsoon at its peak, residents of Baratang in Middle Andaman are living under perpetual fear of disaster striking them in the form of huge trees crashing on their homes during turbulent weather.
Routine crashing incidents of colossal trees has now stirred demand of immediate felling of the tree standing dangerously in residential areas of Baratang to prevent loss of life and property in the region.
Last Friday, a massive tree collapsed into a shop at Oral Katcha area during squally winds. While no one was injured, the shop was damaged extensively in the accident.
“These tall trees in residential areas are posing serious threat to the residents of Baratang as there are every possible chances of these trees falling down over the houses during rainy and cyclonic weather.
Some of the trees in this area were pruned about two years ago, but there are number of others which are threatening us.
The Forest Department should not wait for a disaster to happen and should immediately embark on steps to immediately cut down these dangerous trees to prevent loss of lives and property during mishaps,” said a resident of Oral Katcha.
