Diglipur, Mar 03: The indefinite relay hunger strike which started on 26th Feb at Kalighat, Diglipur has completed six days and will enter day seven tomorrow. The people of Nischintapur started this strike to press their demands for construction of Permanent Bridge between Kalighat and Nishchintapur.
The Nishchintapur Village, a settlement area, consists of about 250 people. People of this area used to cross a wooden bridge on the Kalighat Creek but now the bridge is also gone. A foundation stone was laid by Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, M.P. Andaman & Nicobar in 2002 but the construction work of the Bridge is yet to start.
Today the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Krishna Mohan Uppu, IAS called the agitators to the administrative building at Diglipur for talks. In the evening the Asst. Commissioner Diglipur, Shri Arava Gopi Krishna IAS reached Kalighat and intimated that a team of officials is reaching tomorrow for verification of the spot and requested the villagers to withdraw the strike.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha the villagers said that the strike will not be withdrawn until and unless a written assurance on this matter is given by the authorities.
