Port Blair, Dec 17: Poor telecom facilities is perhaps the biggest hurdle for the development of Andaman and Nicobar Islands but it seems that at least BSNL is hopeful that soon the telecom service in these Islands will improve at par with Mainland India.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha the Chief General Manager, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Mr R. N. Jha, ITS recently said that very soon the telecom facilities of Andaman & Nicobar Islands will be made at par with Mainland.
Mr. Jha said that due to limited bandwidth available, BSNL is unable to give new Broadband connections to customers immediately. “Very soon we will be increasing the capacity and we are going ahead in right direction,” he added.
Giving more details, the CGM said that by January 2015, the speed of internet will be increased to 50 mbps while by February the speed will be increased to 300 mbps. “This will be possible as we have got nearly four transponders on rent from Thaicom 7 Satellite and talks are on for four more transponders,” he said.
Further the CGM added that from GSAT 16, which was launched recently, BSNL, A & N Circle will be initially getting nearly 40- 45 mbps bandwidth while by June-July 2015 these Islands will be getting more 300 mbps of bandwidth.
Islanders have heard dozens and dozens of such promises in past but have kept all hopes alive. Hope in 2015 islanders will witness miracle in Telecom sector of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
