Port Blair, Oct 15: The Greeno Eco Club Of Government Senior Secondary School, Sabari, Middle Andaman observed “Global Handwashing Day 2013” on 15th October 2013.The theme selected for this year was “ The Power is in Your Hands”. Various programmes were conducted to observe the day in a meaningful manner.
Earlier a mass hand washing program was organized for the students of the school in a function held at the school. In his address to the students, Principal said that today diarrheal disease and respiratory tract infections are the two biggest killers of children in the developing world. The simple act of washing hands with soap can significantly cut the risk of diarrhea and that of respiratory tract infection. UNICEF estimates that diarrhea kills one child every 30 seconds. Scientific research shows that hand washing with soap prevents disease in a more straightforward and cost-effective way than any single vaccine. He further added that Handwashing requires very little resources—just soap and a small amount of water, but its impact is huge.
Not only can handwashing with soap prevent common illnesses such as colds and influenza, but it also dramatically reduces the risk of diarrhea and pneumonia, which cause almost 5,000 childhood deaths each day, according to UNICEF.He also urged to the students to use the towels and soaps provided in the toilet and wash area properly. Everyone nodded to this pledge “HYGIENIFY! Wash, wipe, sanitize” to break the chain of germ transmission and promote healthier, more sanitary practices in community, school, home and workplace.
