Port Blair, Mar 05: A lady named Ms Rachael Russell aged 45 years of British Nationality came from Phuket was diving in Andaman Sea when she met with de-compression sickness near thePassageIslandson 04.03.2012 at 19.00 hours.
She got the symptoms of nausea and body ache and mild rashes over the body after doing the scuba diving for 63 minutes the depth of 22 meters. The patient was evacuated by the co-divers who were sailing in the same yacht at 21.00 hours to Chatham Landing Jetty.
Dr Avijit Roy, Port Health Officer, Port Blair after initial assessment of the patient at the jetty itself found that the patient needs re-compression therapy. She was escorted shifted the patient to the naval re-compression chamber at Haddo on stretcher with oxygen. Simultaneously the team at INHS was activated and the patient received the therapeutic Re-compression at the naval base under the direct supervision of Dr Adhikari, CO INHS Dhanvantari along with the other diving specialists of Indian Navy.
The patient received Re-compression treatment for a period of 2 hours and 20 mins and the patient was brought out of the chamber at 12.20 AM. Her condition had improved dramatically and she was later shifted to the Yacht.
The timely action by Port Health Officer and the Active participation of Indian Navy made the event successful and the life of the patient was saved on time.
