Port Blair, July 15: The PCC President, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma today requested the Lt Governor to consider berthing of Kolkata based sailings from Port Blair and vice-versa at Mayabunder Jetty and Chennai based sailings from Port Blair and vice-versa at Campbell bay and Kamorta jetties.
In his letter Sharma wrote that more than one lakh of population reside at Middle and North Andaman and most of them are Bengali and Ranchi settlers and also others and not financially stable and also this is the long pending demand of the residents of Middle and North Andaman areas for berthing of sailings to Kolkata from Port Blair and back at Mayabunder jetty. Sharma has further written that Mayabunder Jetty is fit for berthing of any big ships and requested to consider at least two such berthing in a month that will be a great help for the people of the areas
“ Since Kolkata based ships are not berthing at Mayabunder, a huge number of passengers have to get embarkation for proceeding to Kolkata from Port Blair jetty for which these poor populace have to pay additional charges for coming to Port Blair for their transportation, lodging and boarding to board the ship and also for going back to their destination after coming back from Kolkata at Port Blair Jetty,” he said.
Mr. Sharma added that the commodities meant for these islands are unloaded at Port Blair and for taking these commodities back to those areas extra fare is charged by the couriers, causing the commodities to be more costly when it reaches to the consumers of those areas.
He mentioned that same problem is being faced by the Tsunami affected populace of Campbell bay and Kamorta islands also where a large number of people stay. The sailings for Chennai from Port Blair and back are not berthing regularly at the jetties of Campbell bay and Kamorta though these areas have well equipped jetties.
