Car Nicobar, Apr 23: A First ever Marathon was held in Car Nicobar on Monday to mark world Earth day. The District administration and Indian Air Force jointly organized this mega event to spread the messages on disaster preparedness and protecting the earth from the environmental degradation.
According to the Deputy commissioner and Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority(DDMA), P Jawahar, the Carnic Marathon is aimed at promoting the District Mission on Disaster Preparedness (DMDP) which is going to be launched soon in Nicobar district and seeking the active participation of all concerned in the mission.
More than 500 persons all walks of tribal society, Air force personnel and government servants wearing the T Shirts depicting the theme of disaster preparedness enthusiastically participated in the Marathon and covered the entire distance.
In the closing function, the winners were awarded cash prizes sponsored by various organizations including ANIIDCO, EHL, Banks and private enterprises. The Deputy Commissioner, P Jawahar and the Station Commander of Air Force, Rohit Mahajan presented the awards to the winners.
Before the event was flagged off, all the participants and officials observed two minute silence to pay homage to the then Superintendent of Police of Car Nicobar, Dr B Srikanth who passed away there due to cardiac arrest on 10th last. (PIB)
