Port Blair, Mar 30: The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM has expressed his grief and sorrow over the loss of precious human lives in a tragic road accident at Diglipur in which eight people died and two sustained critical injuries. Seven other people got minor injuries in the accident. The Lt Governor from his camp office at New Delhi has conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured persons. He announced ex-gratia relief of Rs 1.00/- lakh from LG’s Relief Fund to the next of kins of each deceased person. The Lt Governor has also announced Rs 50,000/- to the two critically injured persons in addition to the Administration bearing the full cost of medical treatment of all the injured persons. The seriously injured persons were immediately airlifted to G. B. Pant Hospital where they are undergoing medical treatment. Seven persons with minor injuries are undergoing medical treatment at Radhanagar Primary Health Centre.
The unfortunate accident occurred at 6.45 am today morning when a private truck laden with stone dust overturned near Swaraajgram, Diglipur resulting in on the spot death of eight persons and seriously injuring to two persons and minor injuries to seven others. The truck was going to the worksite of Fish Landing Centre at Durgapur when the driver lost control.

Details are not clear, but again a case of workers riding on loaded truck it appears. Its always the poor workers who pay the price for negligent and rash driving.
