Kannyapuram, February 18: The villagers of Kannyapuram Panchayat are grappling with an acute water shortage owing to damaged pipelines in the region.
According to information, the existing water distribution pipelines maintained by the Road Construction Division (RCD), Wimberlygunj, South Andaman have reportedly become severely damaged, resulting in leakage and insufficient water supply to the residents of Kannyapuram village.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, Mr. P Abdul Basheer, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Kannyapuram said that the villagers are facing significant difficulties in getting drinking water owing to the damaged water distribution pipelines in the region. Water is the most essential commodity of every human being, while it is reportedly wasted due to multiple leakages in the water distribution pipelines in the region, he said. These pipe lines were reportedly laid about 25-30 years ago and have not been replaced with new ones since, and as a result, they have deteriorated significantly, the Pradhan claimed. Despite repeated requests from the villagers and the Panchayat, RCD, Wimberlygunj has reportedly failed to replace the old and damaged pipe lines with new ones, P Abdul Basheer further alleged.
At present, water is being supplied reportedly after every two days with a time limit, and as a result of which the residents of the area aren’t getting water in sufficient quantity, the Pradhan claimed. There is no sufficient number of tanks for storing water for supply, he said. The Road Construction Division (RCD), Wimberlygunj, South Andaman hasn’t reportedly constructed any tanks for storing water in the area in the last three years, the Pradhan alleged. On the other hand, the bed-filter of the Kamsurat Dam is reportedly in damaged state, and hence the water being supplied is reportedly turbid, the Pradhan maintained. The residents in the area, hence, have no choice but to drink unsafe water and use polluted water for other domestic usage that too after every two days and in insufficient quantity, he decried.
The damaged bed-filter of the Kamsurat Dam requires immediate repair thereby restorating the dam to its original condition for uninterrupted supply of water to the villagers, Mr. Basheer said.
Andaman Sheekha Daily tried to contact the concerned Officials of RCD, Wimberlygunj in order to know more on the water crisis, but the officials weren’t available on phone to make any comment on it.
Meanwhile, the Pradhan has urged the higher authorities to address this water issue and take initiatives for replacing existing damaged water pipe lines with new ones in Kannyapuram. He also urged the authorities to increase the number of water tanks and also to explore water sources by constructing check-dams and large ring wells in the region so as to combat the water scarcity in the area. He also urged concerned Officials that they should carry out repair works of bed-filter of Kamsurat Dam thereby eliminating the crisis of drinking water in the region, Mr. P Abdul Basheer further added.
