Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 30: A solemn function was organized today at the Andaman Club to commemorate the historic first flag hoisting in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This event marks a pivotal moment in India’s history when the national flag was first hoisted on the islands, symbolizing the spirit of freedom and unity during the country’s struggle for independence.
In light of the ongoing national mourning, the function was conducted with great reverence and simplicity. Mr. Arjun Sharma, IAS, Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman) led the ceremony by offering floral tributes to honour this momentous occasion. The event witnessed the presence of an august gathering, including officers of the Administration, members of the Freedom Fighters and National Service (FANS), and the general public, all of whom joined to pay their respects.
The ceremony began with a solemn address reflecting on the historical significance of the first flag hoisting and the sacrifices made by freedom fighters who contributed to India’s independence. The gathering also observed a moment of silence to honor the memory of those who laid down their lives for the nation.
The commemoration serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India’s freedom struggle. It was on these islands that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, during his historic visit in December 1943, declared the islands as the first Indian territory liberated from colonial rule and hoisted the tricolor.
This annual event continues to inspire patriotism and a sense of collective pride among the citizens and serves as a tribute to the values of freedom and unity that define India as a nation.
