Port Blair, Dec. 27: The ongoing unmarked and unattended digging work along the main road from Nayagaon to Corbyn Junction via Chakkargaon has become a hazardous trap for local residents. Complaints have poured in from concerned citizens, highlighting the perilous state of the stretch, particularly due to poor lighting conditions at night.
The digging work, initiated by unknown agency to lay underground cables, has left several open trenches without proper reflective markings or safety barriers. The absence of warning signs makes it nearly impossible for pedestrians and vehicles to identify these hazards, especially after dark. Additionally, spilled earth on the road has further exacerbated the danger, causing significant issues for two-wheelers.
Many residents have reported minor accidents, with some sustaining injuries after falling into the unmarked trenches. The lack of streetlights along the stretch makes navigating the area at night even more treacherous, raising concerns about the possibility of a major accident.
Residents have expressed their frustration, accusing the administration of waiting for a serious mishap before taking corrective action. The careless approach by contractors in carrying out the work has drawn sharp criticism, with demands for immediate intervention by the authorities.
“It’s irresponsible and dangerous. The contractors must be instructed to properly mark the trenches with reflective signs and fill them promptly after completing the work,” said a local resident.
The public is urging the administration to ensure that contractors adhere to safety protocols and take immediate measures to address the issue. Proper signage, reflective markings, and the timely restoration of the road are essential to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of the community.
The onus now lies on the administration to act swiftly and ensure accountability, setting a precedent for safer and more responsible public works in the region.
