Sri Vijaya Puram, Dec 24: A series of training programmes on “Scientific Livestock and Poultry Production” was organized by the ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram, at North and Middle Andaman in collaboration with the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, A&N Administration, on 19th and 20th December 2024 under the ‘AICRP on Pig’ and ‘AICRP on Goat’ projects. Dr. Arun Kumar De and Dr. P. Perumal, Senior Scientists from ICAR-CIARI, along with Dr. Sathish Kumar, Senior Veterinary Officer, Rangat; Dr. Dawande Kuldip Namdeo, Senior Veterinary Officer, Webi; and Dr. Sujatha Hegde, Senior Veterinary Officer, Zonal Office, Mayabunder Zone, were the experts. The first programme was held at Bakultala on 19th December 2024, with 60 farmer participants, including cattle, poultry, goat, and pig farmers from various parts of the village. The Secretary of Bakultala Gram Panchayat graced the occasion. On 20th December 2024, another training programme was organized at Karmatang, where 86 farmers from different parts of the village participated. The Pradhan of Karmatang Panchayat was the chief guest. On the same day, a training programme was conducted at Jaipur, Nimbudera, with 48 farmers in attendance.
During these sessions, Dr. P. Perumal provided an in-depth explanation of the scientific rearing of livestock and poultry, emphasizing infertility control and the management of gynecological issues in livestock. Dr. Arun Kumar De focused on scientific pig rearing, detailing practices from birth to market age, control of ecto- and endo-parasites, prevention of neonatal piglet anemia, and the use of ICAR-CIARI products for livestock. He also highlighted the importance of conserving indigenous livestock and poultry breeds of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Dr. Sathish Kumar, Dr. Dawande Kuldip Namdeo, and Dr. Sujatha Hegde discussed sustainable livestock rearing, focusing on seasonal diseases and proper nutritional care for animals. The participating farmers expressed their gratitude to the Senior Veterinary Officers for their prompt responses and dedicated efforts in ensuring proper health care for livestock and poultry. The overall programme was organized under the supervision of Dr.Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram.
