Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 19: D. Ayyappan, Secretary of the CPI (M) A & N State Organising Committee, has written to the Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, urging immediate action concerning the tragic STS bus accident at Rest Camp, Mayabunder, on November 15, 2024. The accident claimed four lives, including a minor boy, and raised serious questions about the maintenance and safety protocols of the State Transport Services (STS).
In his letter, Ayyappan expressed deep concern over the deployment of old buses beyond their permitted utility period, attributing the accident to negligence in maintenance and inspections by the Transport Department. “This tragic incident reflects the mismanagement within government institutions under the current regime,” he stated.
Ayyappan criticized the inquiry ordered by the department, describing it as a mere formality. He called for a high-level investigation led by senior mechanical engineers from the APWD and Transport Department to identify the root causes and suggest improvements to the STS system to prevent future mishaps.
Furthermore, Ayyappan appealed to the Lt. Governor to sanction adequate compensation for the families of the deceased and provide employment to their dependents.
The letter highlights the need for accountability and systemic changes within the State Transport Services to ensure public safety and prevent such tragedies in the future.
