Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 08: The National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), under the Directorate of Social Welfare in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, to teach students in grades IX to XII about the dangers of substance abuse. In-collaboration with the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), South Andaman, this program includes sessions and activities to help students understand the harmful effects of alcohol and drug use. The campaign began at Government Senior Secondary School, Bathubasti, where about 126 students, along with the Principal and teachers, attended.
The program started with a warm welcome address by Miss Shirley, PGT, Government Senior Secondary School, Bathubasti, setting a positive tone for the event. Mr. J. Dasan Pushparaj, Principal, emphasized the importance of the campaign and encouraged students to participate actively in the educational sessions.
Dr. M.K Mahato, Doctor (IRCA), South Andaman led a session on drug abuse prevention, emphasizing the physical and mental health risks associated with drug use, strategies for resisting peer pressure, and the importance of building supportive relationships with family and friends. He encouraged students to seek help early if they or someone they know is struggling with substance abuse, highlighting the importance of early intervention. He also informed students about the 24/7 Helpline No. 112, available for drug-related complaints and counseling, and shared his personal contact number for additional support. Frequently Project Assistant, NAPDDR, also engaged with the students, offering insights on effective study techniques and ways to stay focused. Her session aimed to guide students on avoiding negative influences and maintaining a positive mindset.
The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Thires Packiam, GTT, who expressed gratitude to the guests, students, and faculty for their active participation in this essential awareness campaign.
