Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 30: The Andaman Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee President Mr. Rangalal Halder has raised an urgent appeal to the Director of Agriculture, A & N Administration, to address the critical issue of agricultural input shortages that farmers across the islands currently face.
In his request, Mr. Halder highlighted the significant challenges faced by local farmers due to a lack of access to essential resources such as fertilizers, pesticides, manure, medicines, and quality seeds. Presently, farmers are forced to obtain these necessary supplies from private sources, often at inflated prices. This situation places a heavy financial burden on the farmers, impeding sustainable agricultural practices and undermining the livelihoods of many who rely on farming as a primary source of income.
Mr. Halder underscored the geographical and logistical challenges of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, emphasizing that it is crucial for the Agriculture Department to establish a steady and reliable supply of agricultural inputs through government-operated outlets. He urged that these inputs be made available at subsidized rates to support local farmers and ensure equitable access to essential resources.
“The farmers of Andaman & Nicobar Islands contribute significantly to our local economy and food security. They deserve the support of our government to help alleviate their financial hardships and enable them to maintain sustainable farming practices,” stated Mr. Halder.
Mr. Halder further requested the Director, Agriculture to take prompt and effective steps to address this issue, ensuring that the farmers receive the support they need to continue their vital work.
