Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 16: The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), a demand-driven wage employment scheme, continues to play a pivotal role in providing employment opportunities and enhancing the livelihood of rural households across the country. MGNREGA guarantees 100 days of wage employment per financial year to each household in rural areas, focusing on unskilled manual labour.
Two recent initiatives under the MGNREGA scheme have been taken up at CD Block Prothrapur under South Andaman District. One is the development of moringa plantations on the land of individual beneficiaries as per Category-B works of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the villages Rangachang and Beodnabad under the Gram Panchayat Beodnabad on October 8, 2024. These projects were inaugurated in the presence of the Block Development Officer, Prothrapur; Pradhan Gram Panchayat Beodnabad and other PRI members of the Panchayat.Total 30 beneficiaries are provided employment in the works and are set to generate 646 persondays. The moringa plantation projects not only create employment for MGNREGA beneficiaries but also enhance the scope of livelihoods of the said individual beneficiaries through sale of Moringa and its by products in the market.
Additionally, on October 14, 2024, another project involving the maintenance of a katcha road in Calicut village under the Gram Panchayat Calicut was initiated. This project will generate 1402 persondays and provide employment for 30 beneficiaries. It aims to improve the local infrastructure while directly benefiting the villagers of Calicut by improving road access and transportation. The work was inaugurated by the Pradhan Gram Panchayat Calicut in the presence of other PRI members.
These efforts underscore MGNREGA’s commitment to boosting rural employment and improving the livelihoods of local communities. The scheme continues to play an essential role in alleviating rural poverty and providing crucial employment opportunities to the rural workforce.
