Billyground, Mar 03: A driver of State Transport Service Bus was arrested by Police early this morning for driving the bus under heavy influence of alcohol and also for putting lives of 20 passengers at risk.
The incident took place at around 5.30 am when passengers, travelling in STS’s Baratang – Billyground Express, found that the driver of their bus is driving the bus in uncontrollable speed and is not responding to any request made of the passengers to slow down the bus. Passengers smelled that the driver was under heavy influence of alcohol.
Finding no other options, some of the alert passengers called up Andaman Sheekha’s Billyground Correspondent, Mr. Trinath following which the matter was immediately informed to the officials of PS Billyground and Police Out Post Betapur.
Acting promptly on the information, the PS Billyground Police team intercepted the Bus at Billyground Bazaar and the driver was detained. Soon the driver was taken to PHC Billyground for medical examination.
Medical test showed that the driver, Mr. Biswanath was under heavy influence of liquor. The Police team immediately registered a case against Mr. Biswanath, under section 184/185 MV Act and seized the bus. The bus was later released as per rule.
Meanwhile sources told Andaman Sheekha that at the time of the incident a Senior STS Inspector was also on duty in between Rangat to Swadeshnagar and it is a matter of shame that he also did not take any initiative to inform the officer in-charge about this incident.
When, the conductor was also questioned on why he dint inform the authorities he said that he was trying to inform but due to problems in the mobile network of BSNL in the region he was not able to do so. This type of incidents often takes place in N & M Andaman region but sadly most of the incidents go un-reported.
