Port Blair, Sept. 3: Mr. Abhay Kumar, Convener of the Hindu Seva Sangh, has submitted a formal request to the Member of Parliament representing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, urging the reinstatement of the Local Certificate with constitutional powers. In his letter, dated September 3, 2024, Mr. Abhay Kumar highlighted the significance of the Local Certificate, which was previously issued to island residents under various categories until 1999.
He pointed out that the Local Certificate system had been effectively serving the diverse community of the islands until it was challenged in court. The Andaman and Nicobar Administration had defended the certificate up to the Supreme Court level. However, since its discontinuation, the absence of such a certificate has reportedly led to concerns among islanders regarding their rights and opportunities.
Mr. Abhay Kumar emphasized the urgent need for the government to reintroduce the Local Certificate with constitutional backing, asserting that it would play a crucial role in safeguarding the interests of the island’s residents. He appealed to the Member of Parliament to utilize their parliamentary powers to address this issue at all appropriate levels.
Mr. Kumar expressed hope that the re-establishment of the Local Certificate with constitutional authority would serve the larger public interest of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
