Port Blair, July 01: The Police Marine Force, A&N Police under the supervision of Smti Varsha Sharma, IPS, Deputy Inspector General of Police (PMF), along with Ms. Shweta K Sugathan, IPS, SP (PMF), and Mr. Ajay Rai, DANIPS, DYSP (PMF), organized a special awareness programme on the implementation of new criminal laws. This event, attended by Coastal Security Stakeholders including the Coast Guard, Forest Department, Fisheries Department, and local fishermen, took place at Khaitan Kalyan Mandapam at 1200hrs on 1st July, 2024.
The three new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—were officially implemented on 01/07/2024 in the A&N Islands. During the programme, stakeholders were briefed on the significant changes and major amendments introduced by these laws.
Key changes include: The introduction of Zero FIR, Provision for electronic submission of information, mandated free copies of FIRs to both victims and accused individuals.
The programme also highlighted the stricter penalties for sexual offenses, particularly against minors, with increased minimum sentences and enhanced punishments for repeat offenders.
In addition to the informative sessions, a nukkad natak was performed by the Police Entertainment Team. This street play effectively conveyed the essence of the new laws and their impact, making the information more accessible and engaging for all participants.
The awareness programme aimed to strengthen and improve coordination among Coastal Security Stakeholders and the Fishermen Community, emphasizing the crucial role of information sharing.
During the event, the DIGP (PMF) distributed Commendation Certificates to two fishermen, Mr. Ch. Veera Swamy and Mr. S.U. Maheshwar Rao, for their valuable information provided to the Marine Police Control Room regarding the sighting of foreign poachers.
