Port Blair, Jan 29: In a significant operational shift, the Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) notifies all Commercial, Institutional, and Industrial Establishments in Port Blair regarding the waste collection during night collection by the Sanitation wing of the Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) starting from February 1, 2024 replacing the existing process handled by the Self Help Group.
This aligns with the Solid Waste (Handling and Management) Bye Laws, 2017 of the Port Blair Municipal Council, emphasizing a collaborative approach to waste management. Commercial Institutional, and Industrial Establishments & stakeholders are earnestly urged to cooperate with the PBMC’s sanitation wing to ensure the seamless implementation.
It is now mandatory for Commercial, Institutional, and Industrial Establishments to segregate waste into Dry and Wet categories. Additionally, establishments are required to process organic waste at the source, handing over only dry recyclables to PBMC’s Staff during the daily waste collection, in adherence to the PBMC – Solid Wastes (Handling and Management) Bye-Laws, 2017. Failure to adhere to these regulations will result in necessary penalties. Moreover, gross violations may lead to the disconnection of water supply and the temporary suspension of the establishment, in accordance with applicable laws.
Furthermore, in accordance with the Bye-Laws, the PBMC will now facilitate the monthly user fee collection through Point of Sale (POS) machines. These machines have been issued for each ward, following the classified schedule-III for monthly user fees applicable to shops, establishments, institutions, and bulk waste generators.
As a responsible community, it is incumbent upon everyone to contribute to the serene beauty of our Islands, which not only uplift the local environment but also leaves good impression on the tourists visiting to our beautiful city.
The Port Blair Municipal Council urges residents, businesses, and visitors alike to practice responsible waste management and cooperate us in implementing these measures, which are essential for fostering a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
