Port Blair, Jan 28: A new wave of cyber-attacks has been observed targeting users through malicious browser extensions. The attackers often use social engineering techniques to trick users into installing the malicious browser extension. Generally, Gmail accounts are being targeted from a malicious browser extension, spread via phishing emails, that targets Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and other Chromium-based browsers. Once installed, this extension is able to steal contents of Gmail messages and even infect the mobile phones, especially android phones.
In this regard, Andaman and Nicobar Police issues the following advisory to safeguard yourself:
1. Regularly review the installed browser extensions to identify any suspicious ones. Avoid installing any extension or other software sent to you in an email.
2. Only download extensions from trusted sources, such as the Chrome Web Store or Mozilla add-ons, etc.
3. Avoid opening emails from unknown senders as well as downloading any attachments they may contain.
4. Avoid clicking on links from suspicious emails or posts on message boards, as they could lead to compromised pages.
5. Install antivirus apps and enable Google Play Protect on your smartphone.
6. Keep software up to date to benefit from the latest bug fixes and security patches.
