Port Blair, Jan 21: The serene Collinpur Beach of South Andaman, cherished by the residents of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is grappling with a pressing issue of littering. A popular destination for weekend getaways and picnics, the beach attracts a large number of visitors seeking leisure and amusement. While the Panchayat has made efforts to regulate activities along the picturesque shoreline, a grave concern persists in the interior areas adjacent to the beach.
Despite the beach’s outward appearance of cleanliness, the spaces where families gather for lunch and picnics tell a different story. Over the years, this area has become a dumping ground for various forms of waste, creating an eyesore for both locals and tourists. Plates, glasses, plastic bottles, liquor bottles, and miscellaneous litter are scattered across the vicinity, tarnishing the beauty of Collinpur Beach.
Though the Panchayat has shown some vigilance in the area, the scale of littering remains a major challenge. It is high time for the administration to intervene and address this escalating problem. The lack of proper disposal practices is not only impacting the aesthetics of the area but also poses environmental and health hazards.
While some responsible families conscientiously dispose of their waste in designated bins, a disturbing trend persists where others choose to abandon their garbage, undermining efforts to maintain cleanliness. It is imperative that both the tourism department and the concerned Panchayat take immediate steps to initiate a thorough cleaning drive in the vicinity.
Local authorities should consider collaborating with both governmental and non-governmental organizations to conduct regular cleanliness drives. This collaborative effort would not only address the existing litter issue but also instil a sense of responsibility among visitors, ensuring the long-term preservation of Collinpur Beach as a pristine and attractive destination.
