Port Blair, Jan 16: The Shyamkund Jetty, a project initiated in 2007 and completed in 2009, has remained non-operational since its completion. Presently, the jetty is undergoing a thorough renovation, expected to be completed within the next month.
The renovation comes after years of dormancy since the completion of the initial project. The Pradhan of Bakultala Middle Andaman has been actively involved in pushing for the swift completion of the renovation, emphasizing the importance of reactivating the jetty for the benefit of the people living in the region. In a series of letters to the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS), the Pradhan has urged expedited work and the prompt commencement of speed boat services.
Highlighting the necessity of operational speed boats post-renovation, the Pradhan told Andaman Sheekha Daily that he believes that the reactivation of Shyamkund Jetty will significantly ease the commuting process for passengers in the region. Expressing concerns over the delay, the Pradhan has consistently advocated for the rapid completion of the renovation project.
However, an emerging issue pertains to the delay in issuing orders for depth measurement by the Andaman Lakshadweep Harbour Works (ALHW), as urgently requested by the Directorate of Shipping Services. Despite the Pradhan’s engagement with ALHW engineers, there has been no communication or directive for depth measurement, causing a setback in the resumption of speed boat services.
The current operational hurdle lies in the absence of depth measurement, preventing the initiation of speed boat services. The Pradhan emphasized that once the depth measurement is complete, the remaining renovation work will swiftly conclude, leading to the prompt inauguration of Shyamkund Jetty. While the majority of the jetty’s renovation is expected to be completed within the next month, the delay in the depth measurement process poses a challenge. Residents of the region are now demanding urgent intervention of Chief Secretary in this issue.
